As humans, I know we all have expectations. I doubt there is any human without expectations. We all have expectations and they are in varying degrees. What I expect in a relationship might be different from yours and our expectations are sometimes as a result of our background; where we are coming from and our exposure; what we have been seeing around. Even in life, we have expectations of what we expect to see in this life.
Just because we have some expectations doesn’t mean those expectations are legit expectations. Some expectations are legit while some are not healthy. We all have this feeling of entitlement and that is the truth. We sometimes have this feeling of entitlement as a result of our closeness or as a result of the relationship we have.
I need to let us understand that your status has nothing to do with how well you are going to do in life. Every relationship has to be nurtured and they should never be taken for granted. Some relationships come into your life at a particular season in your life and you need to understand how these things work.
Most people, when they are in a dating relationship and their partner decides to lend a helping hand in whatever capacity to them, they see it as a right. The truth is, until you are married, whatever privilege you are enjoying in that relationship is not a right but just a mere privilege that must never be taken for granted. I recently learned about a guy that resigned from his job and the girlfriend was very supportive. The lady started giving him money till he would be able to find another job (for whatever reason he has for quitting the other one in the first place).
The guy felt so comfortable and started taking advantage of the lady. It was so funny that he told the lady she is expected to start giving him a portion of her salary. I was shocked. I don’t know where that was written and maybe it was written but I didn’t get the memo. Some guys are such a disgrace to the XY chromosome.

Their is this popular saying that says expect nothing and you will have nothing. While it is not bad to have expectations like you rightly said, having it so high might lead to disappointment when those expectations are not met.

Yes, we should have expectations as human but we need to be realistic about it. We need to show considerations with our expectations.

This attracts my attention, Although, in relationships it is not a must that a man should be the only one given, and the guy that made it a mandate for the lady to give some part of her salary might have done exactly the same. Some ladies are so mean to the extent of depending on their guy for everything as if they were already married which shouldn't and if the guy decided not to give as expected they will term him, stingy.
Taking advantage of another person or demanding by right that they are to give you a part of their income doesn't make much sense. Regardless of whether it is the guy or the lady, no one should take advantage of each other. This is why being considerate with each other is vital and it would help a lot to reduce expectations and not be demanding.
