Don't Fight For Hills That You Can't Keep - Daily Meditation #22

in #life8 years ago

Don't spread your forces too thin. You'll fight the war of life on too many fronts, and you'll lose on all of them. When you insist on fighting for every hill you can, you might take one or two of them, but you end up keeping none of them.

Time is a scarce commodity. Your vitality is fleeting. Why do you fight like you'll live forever and never run out of energy? It is better to focus on winning a handful of battles, rather than trying to be involved in every battle.

How much can you actually accomplish? How much is truly essential in your life? Where are you wasting time and energy? Do few things, and do them well.

Fight for hills that you can keep. Marshall your forces with intention and purpose.  The tide will eventually turn in your favour.

Do you feel spread too thin? Do you feel a lack of focus in your life? How do you stay focused? Leave me a comment below and tell me your thoughts about the ideas I shared above.

Boom 💣

Never thought of or heard this metaphor before but I love it. Can relate a lot too, especially a couple of years back I had aspiration to seize every hill, ending up barely making it to a single one. Luckily I've grown wiser over the years, although I plan on narrowing my focus even more in the future, a bit to wide spread focus at times 🙏🏼

I think it is a thing that people develop with age. I was (and still can be) the same way.

Life is super short. I think we can only do a small handful of things really well.

Take care, brother!

So true and I am so guilty of this. Took on way too much and spread myself to thin. Ended up super stressed and sick and the weird thing was I found myself at a point where even the most simple of tasks was too much. "Pick your battles", good advice as always.

I feel atrocious when I am spread too thin. I think I had to write this post to remind myself to settle down. I am glad we are both learning this lesson!

@chrismccron You're so right bro. We need to know your enemy and know yourself first, then we can emerge victorious in every battle :)

Focus goes a long way towards cultivating success.

This is an excellent reminder on knowing your limitations so that you can use your resources wisely. It's true that committing yourself to do lots of things when you don't have the time or energy to do, is just not conducive to one's well-being, mentally, physically or emotionally.
Nice write-up :)

Exactly! Why do something when it isn't smart, helpful, and doesn't feel good? Spreading ourselves too thin is something we do all the time. I don't think its intentional, so we need to develop the habit of noticing when its happening.

Not only just a habit of noticing, but also being able to say no or turn down things. Because sometimes, there are things that we might be good at and we're asked to do them, but it might not be good since they'll take up time and effort that we can't really spare...

Yes! Once you say "yes" to a large commitment, you are actually also saying "no" to all other options!

Yep. But saying no is actually a hard thing to. I still have problems concerning this, especially when it's teachers that ask me to do things, I feel guilty if I turn them down.

As we used to say in the Corps...pick your battles. Great advice.

Thanks for your support and the comment!

As I have heard often in program..."you don't have to go to every fight you are invited to..."

Also...as one gets older...the limitations become much more apparent...and when all said and done...how do you want to spend your day?

You're right that we can spend our days in a lot of battles we don't want to be in. Ultimately, this message is about reclaiming your time. Thank you for the comment. :)
