Who can remember drive in theatres?

in #life7 years ago

I wonder how many people remember the drive-in?  We used to go every Friday night, as there was no television in South Africa yet.   To us it was a wonderful outing. I use to pack a picnic basket with all the nice things everyone loved to eat. My only problem was that my daughter @giantbear had to be fed before we go.

For some reason she had to sleep before we left, as she could not watch the movie on the screen. She had motion sickness, and you can imagine that mess if if she did not sleep early enough. Her younger brother @jacor used to fall asleep on the way to the movie.

For those who don’t know, what I’m talking about, a drive-in theatre was where you parked your car, and put the speaker in the window, so you had sound for the movie. We use to put pillows and blankets in the back of the car, and made a bed for the kids to sleep. Those were wonderful days, because you could go out with your kids and no worries that they were unsafe. We also did not need to hire a baby sitter and worry the whole night.

I often miss those days when were still together. Yet we know that we have wonderful kids and they gave us wonderful grandchildren that we cannot be more proud of. This just make you realize that somewhere we as parents did something right.

My son @jacor has two little girls and my daughter @giantbear, has two sons. What more can we ask for? These memories will be in my heart forever. I have been married for 47 years, and often think of the wonderful times we had as parents of these two young kids.

I'll tell you what I remember as a kid about drive-in movies. We had a station wagon with a blanket rolled out and the seats down. We might sometimes hide to "get in free". Often back then there was a double feature, with kid-friendly movie followed by a not so kid-friendly movie (I remember something like Escape from Witch Mountain or Ice Pirates followed by some stupid Cheech & Chong movie. To this day I hate anything Cheech & Chong. But the whole thing was a great ADVENTURE!

Agree most definitely thanks for comment still figuring out how this works my daughter says I dont reply but I do try getting bit old lol

of course we do....and the cost too ...lol

Those were the best days of my life!

And the bucket of popcorn....drizzeled with real butter (or so it tasted like it).

I am now really feeling like making popcorn now lots of butter

cost was a lot those days we saved like mad to be able to go

but it was a huge treat....at least to me

I never thought that this is for real. I saw it from Cars movie. Amazing

Oh it was the best time ever!

This might be my sesond reply but my daugter just showed me where to go so I can reply to all it was wonderful ty

I remember them very well...as a high school kid, they were terrific "passion pits," where one could neck for hours without parental monitoring...

We use to sometimes sit in front of the car and watch, those were the "passion pits" lol

There are still 338 drive-in theaters in the US. You can look up where to find them by state here:

I remember them well, especially those huge speakers you had to clip on your windows. My first date with my husband in 1989 was at the drive-in! A few years later the drive-in in our town closed :(

Was lots of fun thanks for reading

I wonder why they don't have drive in movies anymore. I've never been to one but they seem like a good idea

The reason that we don't have Drive-in theaters anymore is due to the fact that we don't get the film's for the projector which were used anymore.

People are turning to digital world and stayed at home. That one disadvantage though :)

wonderful, a real outing lol

They are as lots of people can get together and eat and drink when it was half time they use to have take-away shops. Best popcorn ever.

We still have one here in Virginia just minutes from my house.

Oh how lovely! Here in South Africa the crime became too high and they removed all the drive- ins as it is too unsafe. Thank you for your comment!
