Home Swallowed by Giant Sinkhole. Nova Scotia Canada. This stuff seems to be happening more and more, if you ask me.

in #life7 years ago

Chris Strickey's home was being sucked into the ground very very early Sunday morning around 4 am on the East Coast of Canadastan.

To the family inside it sounded like a home invasion... but it was only the giant sinkhole sucking their home into the ground.

The 12 year old home on Mountain View Drive in Falmouth Nova Scotia had no prior signs of structural failure, the owner stated in various interviews.

Strickey's wife and 16-year-old daughter were in the home of course at that time.

"I received a phone call at one minute before 4 a.m. from my wife to tell me that literally the house had collapsed,"

the Hants County resident told news agencies and officials.

Strickey said his family hid in a closet, called 911 and hoped for the best, as they felt their home was being invaded or robbed. When police arrived on scene, it was clear that a sinkhole had opened up.

"The first floor had probably collapsed 20-30 feet into the sinkhole," Paul Maynard, deputy fire chief with Hantsport Fire Department told CBC.

"We called the power company and made sure the power was disconnected, and the water and sewer lines were disconnected. There was an outside oil tank that was compromised. We had a hazmat team from Annapolis Valley respond to the scene and pump out the oil tank."

First Responders were able to collect some of the family's possessions before the structure was ruled unsafe to enter.

"It's hard to think of all the stuff that we've lost, but so be it. Everyone is safe," Strickey told CBC.

Family neighbour Rick Porter watched as firefighters secured the area.

"They cut the back of the house open and drug the vehicle out the back wall of the garage and then put it on a tow truck and then took it away," Porter told CBC.

The whoe thing remains under investigation. Structural engineers and geo technicians will be making a complete survey of the site, agencies report.

Nova Scotia fact: Many natural sinkholes form over areas where:

Windsor Group gypsum occurs in the near surface...

-- according to the Department of Natural Resources website in Nova Scotia which also says:

"The geological boundary between the gypsum and salt-bearing Windsor Group and the underlying sandstones and shales of the Horton Group or older basement rocks is particularly prone to sinkhole development,"

Maynard say the following about his first sinkhole experience in his 28 years of firefighting:

"It's a freak thing. It's the first time that I've ever experienced this in the area that involved a structure," he told CBC. "They [sinkholes] are a little bit unpredictable."

I left Florida because of sink holes, now I have to leave Nova Scotia too?

There's a bunch going on out there!

Tell me it ain't so Brother!!!!!

Thanks for sharing. :)

Interesting post, my friend

Scary shit!

Sinkholes = Government.

We have had some pretty good sized ones here too. One we had right in the center of the town road and shut down traffic. My concern is that this area is loaded with tons of caverns which could collapse at anytime. Biblical and scary stuff! Water is also disappearing down holes in a lot of areas.

More and more every year, I am hearing about like I said in the post, they are worsening man!!!!

Sinkholes do seem to be popping up more and more... I've heard about them in California Florida and Pennsylvania fairly recently... but that could also be because everybody has social media of some sort now a days
