Why Being Embarrassed Of Your Past Is A Sign Of Self-Growth

We have all experienced embarrassment at some point in our lives. In most cases, they are rather insignificant and easy to be forgotten as we get older. But sometimes, there's just too much it in our past that it simply can't be overlooked.

Oftentimes, we start to see ourselves as someone who always screws things up, and feeling this way makes us super self-conscious and not wanting to make any serious decisions in the fear that we might make yet another mistake.

But what most of us fail to learn is how just knowing and realizing that you actually did, in fact, made a mistake, is the first step to self-growth. Think about it. You can't teach yourself if you don't even know where you went wrong.

Embarrassment As A Sign Of Self-Growth

It's only when you know that you have done something you shouldn't have, do you learn what you should do in the future. We humans are like that. We learn more from our own personal regrets than from when we hear advice from other people.

Experiences teach us way better than explanations ever could, and that's exactly the reason why you should not be afraid of making mistakes or dwelling upon your old ones as they could be your life's biggest lessons.

You may often have heard people tell you to not look back at your past or the mistakes that you did in it, but what these people fail to understand is how yesterday's failure is tomorrow's wisdom.

Your Experiences Shape Your Personality

Think about it. Every single mistake that you have ever made in your life until now, has contributed into shaping the person you are today. Our regrets mold us way harder than our achievements do.

That's the reason why being embarrassed or ashamed of your past isn't really something which puts you down, but something that reminds you far you have come and how much you have grown as a person.

I have usually seen that people who are not afraid to share their embarrassing moments with others, are the ones who don't let their past trap them in chains. When you reveal your shame, you take away all its power, and that's where fear fails and courage wins.

You have a way of hitting the nail right on the head. Everyone must realize Universal Principle #1: You reap what you sow. It matters not who you are, you reap what you sow. Good and bad. I tell people if they don't like how their life is going, change how they make decisions. Embarrassment over past mistakes is the first step to realizing Universal Principle #1 and how we can use it to redirect our future.

So true. I think for the most part, people only think of what they were, and not what they can become. They don't see potential, but rather keep fearing the past.

Occasionally I'll have flashbacks to some stupid shit I did as a kid or young adult, but the embarrassment usually washes over after a few seconds and I appreciate how far I've come emotionally.

Haha I can relate. I've done a lot of stupid shit as a kid too, but I think on some level, that embarrassment is important. It teachers you things pride can't.

Yes that is very true this is just a part of life

It is true and sometimes we forget this vital lesson. Good article, thanks for sharing.

Thank you :D

Well said @ayushjalan😉 something embarassing in our past sometimes became a good way of good interaction with other 😊 we might regret the mistake we made and we learn how to avoid the same mistake in the future. But if you treated someone so bad in the past and that someone is already passed away, what else left unless the being embarrassed and regret it for the rest of our life?

I think it depends on how one looks at it. If you were the cause of something like that, I'm pretty sure you would, like you said, regret it for the rest of your life. No matter what, every experience teaches us something.

Some cultures - especially the military, require a ":thick skin" to survive. I can still remember every "initiation" (aka hazing rituals) that I went through during my career.

Solid post.
