 What is dissociative identity disorder?

 Dissociative identity disorder is a psychological disorder in which one has two or more distinct personality states. It is a very rare condition. 

What are the symptoms of someone who has Dissociative identity disorder?

The symptoms include severe depression, feeling self pity, amnesia or blackout, constant mood swings, self harm, or impassivity. 

What are possible causes of dissociative identity disorder?

In most cases, people who have split personality have suffered with childhood issues like being abused. It often occurs with people who have went through a difficult time or a difficult past. Commonly people who have been through severe trauma have this problem. 

Here is the story of one of the first cases of  Dissociative identity disorder that was recorded: 

There was a Frenchman by the named of Louis Vivet. He was among the first patients to be diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder. He was born in the year 1863 to a prostitute. Vivet was only 8 years old when he had started a life of crime. He was very neglected in his childhood years. He was arrested when he was a teenager and was put into a treatment home. He then started to work in a vineyard and a viper had wrapped itself onto his arm. It had not bitten him but due to the fear that it had caused him, he became paralyzed from his waist and down. One year later, he began to work again and his personality was completely different than before. He was more aggressive and had a darker side to him. He took such a change that even the way he had eaten and his appetite had changed. At the age of 18, he was released from the asylum. He was then in out out of hospitals in the following years. Between the years 1880- 1881, he had been diagnosed with a mutiple personality disorder. Doctors had discovered that Vivet had up to 10 different personalities!!!! Some say that it was only 3 but others believe that he had 10 personality types.
