Life in High Tolerance
ACEH is the territory of Sumatra island, Indonesia, since hundreds years ago Aceh inhabited by many religions, and the majority is Islam. Aceh also very kindness to migrants from any region, including from Arabia up to Indies who trade to Aceh, because it is known by the spice.
So also with Hindus, they until now settled with peace in Aceh. Last week, I visited Keudah Village (Gampong Keudah), Kuta Raja Sub-district, Banda Aceh. The local community has just finished doing mutual assistance. They do every week. Moslem and Hindu society, they help each other.
They look very compact. The area of Gampong Keudah is location of Palani Andawer Temple, belonging to Hindus in Banda Aceh. When there is community activities, this place of worship also looks closed, there is no activity at all.
After a few minutes, a person who has just finished working together, later known as Rada Khrisna, is seen entering a house across the street from the temple, this black man then exits his house to the temple.
The man who acknowledged himself from this South Asian (South Indian) Tamil nation, said that he and his cultivation had been before independence, his parents and grandfather had lived in Aceh.
Currently, the Hindu community living in Banda Aceh is around 150 inhabitants. According to the man who is fluent in Aceh, the Tsunami disaster that struck Aceh in 2004, also devastated the Palani Andawer Temple, only in 2006, the temple was rebuilt with funds from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, Provincial Religion and Banda Aceh City.
Currently the Hindu community living in Aceh, peaceful with the present condition. Aceh that is often imaged is synonymous with violence and intolerance against other faiths, because the implementation of Islamic Shari'ah, it is very different from reality in the field.
This is acknowledged by Hindus in Aceh, as evidenced by the smooth celebration of Pangguni Uthiram ritual performed by Tamil Hindus in Banda Aceh each year.
In other side, Rada also considered that the people of Aceh are also very tolerant and do not regard minorities as something to watch out for. In fact, if there are people who died too, equally help each other, including in terms of digging the grave.
