Melting permafrost and the associated carbon emissions have reduced the carbon dioxide emission budget to almost zero. As a result, the risks of a climate catastrophe increase due to exceeding the permissible volumes of greenhouse gases. This is the conclusion reached by a group of international scientists from Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Research experts published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

The emission budget of carbon dioxide is the permissible amount of emissions for a certain period, which does not threaten to exceed the level of global warming.

According to the Paris Climate Agreement 2015, to prevent catastrophic climate change, the growth of the global average temperature should not exceed 1.5 degrees.

For this, the emission budget should not exceed 550 gigatons CO2. If the current level of emissions is maintained, it will be exhausted in about six years.

Scientists analyzed the effects of carbon dioxide and methane emissions due to melting of permafrost and concluded that the emission budget could decrease from 30 to 100 gigatons and the temperature would rise by 1.5–2 degrees.

At the same time, the Paris Agreement provides for a temporary increase of the established limits to 2.5 degrees and a 16% budget reduction. However, scientists note a high risk of acceptability of raising limits. According to them, this will lead to irreversible consequences.

On September 10, it was reported that Russian scientists had recorded critical warming in the Arctic. The average annual temperature exceeded the norm by 3.23 degrees Celsius. Such warming can lead to melting of glaciers in the Arctic Ocean and flooding of the nearest regions.
