The evolution of a cycle tourist part 6

in #life7 years ago

So as much as cycle touring is about travel it is perhaps more about experiencing life, true liberty, and freedom.

This episode is about graduating to the Long Haul Trucker(LHT) and the 1800km tour in Thailand..

The slightly modified LHT.

Steem ON!

Was that your bike with all the stuff on the front? That seems like it'd be hard to turn.

That one with all the stuff isn't mine, but bikes like the Surly Long Haul Trucker are designed to handle some mighty heavy loads, and handle very well, though a bit more slowly.

That's good to know. Rock on! Would you say it's better to load it down like that or to pull the trailer like you had in one of the other posts?

Depends a bit on the bicycle you have, the Surly Long Haul Trucker is designed and built to carry big loads, and indeed performs best when loaded up.
I choose the trailer for the folding bike so as not to stress the bike itself with heavy loads, also I can use the trailer with a lighter duty off the shelf mountain bike.
The big disadvantage of the trailer is the ability to carry way too much!
But that would be an advantage if you were crossing say the Australian outback where lots of extra water and food would be needed.

The Brompton folding bike with the trailer was great for the versatility of being able to carry anything and everything and still be able to hop on the fast trains which prohibit a full size bike.
Stay tuned for parts 7&8 when I get into the "bike packing" minimalist approach.
Cheers.
