Today, we are tackling Lesson 3 using Complete Spanish Step-by-Step by Barbara Bregstein(I highly recommend this textbook, it includes written assignments that really help with comprehension).

If you've been following along, you will undoubtedly have noticed yesterday's vocabulary was quite intense See the 140 Flashcards here.

I am preparing these lessons and resources to use at your own pace.

Remember, it's better to solidly grasp concepts and vocabulary than to just rush through.

By no means would I expect anyone to do one Lesson a day!

Here are the Key Concepts we will cover in this lesson:

Hay (pronounced eye) means:

-there is
-there are
-is there?
-are there?

The only difference between a statement and a question is the punctuation. To make a statement a question, simply add an inverted question mark (¿) before and a regular question mark (?) after the statement.

The Spanish definite articles el, la, los, and las never follow hay.

When hay is used with a plural noun, the article is omitted.

If you want to turn a sentence into a negative, place no in front of hay.

Interrogative words:

All interrogative words carry written accents(but those accents don't affect the pronunciation).

¿Cómo? -How?
¿Dónde? -Where?
¿Quién? -(singular)Who?
¿Quiénes? -(plural)Who?
¿Qué? -What?
(¿Qué? used before ser asks for a definition.)
¿Cuál? -(singular) Which? Which one?
¿Cuáles? -Which? Which ones?
(¿Cuál? when used immediately before ser asks for a selection or choice from among various possibilities.)
¿Por qué? -Why?
¿Cuánto? -How much?
¿Cuántos?(m)¿Cuántas?(f) -How many?
(¿Cuántos?(m)¿Cuántas?(f) are adjectives and must thus agree with the plural nouns they describe.)
¿Cuándos? -When?
