Lenovo thinks of merging Fujitsu's PC Deparment

As mentioned in Japanese media, the Chinese Lenovo is in talks with Fujitsu to acquire the ailing PC manufacturing business that is remaining. Although in early 2000, Fujitsu was one of the top five PC manufacturers globally, today the undertaking is loss-making for the Japanese company. The margins -mainly due to the market shift to tablets and smartphones - compressed and the IT department of the Fujitsu Group works to get rid of non-core businesses and to improve profitability. 

The company announced last February the independence / separation of the computer department in a separate company, a move that usually precedes a sale or a major restructuring.

Fujitsu originally hoped in a merger with VAIO from Sony company and Toshiba's PC division, but discussions on the merger collapsed because none of the three companies wanted to take over the majority package of shares, and therefore control, eventually leading Fujitsu to start discussions with Lenovo. The Chinese company based in Beijing, is promising to maintain factories and jobs, and thus the potential will join about 2000 people. If ultimately advance the acquisition, Lenovo will strengthen its market position as the largest computer manufacturer in the world with a share of 21.1%, according to IDC. The acquisition also will control 40% of the Japanese market, where Fujitsu has the second place, after the NEC Lenovo Japan Group which holds the first place.
