Brave astronaut Mike today will help me tell you some interesting facts about astronauts. Mike a brave astronaut and these are interesting facts he told me. Enjoy!

  1. A space suit costs $ 12 million.

  2. According to the astronaut, the smell of space is comparable to toasted steak, hot metal, and smoke that appears after welding.

  3. International Space Station astronauts have the opportunity to see an increasing number of sunrises and sunsets every day - as many as 15.

  4. While in space, astronauts cannot cry because there is no gravity, so tears do not fall down their face.

  5. Most of them in space become about two inches taller.

  6. There is a machine at the International Space Station that is used to purify urine into drinking water.

  7. The heart of astronauts in space becomes rounder.

  8. Alan Sheppard, who became the second person and first American to fly into space in 1961 and commanded the Apollo 14 mission, succeeded in golfing twice on the moon.

  9. Anatoly Solovyov, a retired Soviet cosmonaut and colonel of the Soviet Air Force holds the world record for space walks (16) and total hours spent off-plane - 82 hours and 22 minutes.

  10. Certain foods (such as bread, instead of tortillas) are not allowed in space, and most commonly consumed are juices, fruits, meat and pasta.

  11. Since there is no wind, rain or water on the moon, the footprints of astronauts who have stepped onto this celestial body will not be wiped out for at least 100 million years.

  12. Considering the fact that space walks usually last longer than 6 hours, astronauts are equipped with diapers suitable for maximum absorption.

  13. Sleeping is a great adventure for astronauts. Most of them prefer to sleep in specially designed sleeping bags, which are hooked to the wall or floor.

  14. As far as dressing rooms are concerned, astronauts can train whatever they want inside the station.

  15. In their spare time, they are allowed to read books, watch movies, communicate with family and friends on Earth. Likewise, to reduce the degree of muscle atrophy and osteoporosis, they exercise daily.

  16. You can't whistle in a space suit. This was also attempted in 1999 by astronaut Dan Barry, who explained the reason why space travel was certainly less fun for him. Specifically, the air pressure in a space suit is much lower than on Earth, so we simply can't get enough air through our lips to make a sound as we whistle.

  17. Space astronauts do not feel the need to urinate, but are trained to go to the toilet every 2 hours.

  18. Almost every astronaut feels some of the effects of space sickness, caused by the wide range of confusing information that goes into their inner ear. In addition to the anguish, the symptoms include severe headaches and problems with locating your own limbs.

  19. A 2001 study found that astronauts snooping on Earth, sleeping peacefully in space, without these awful noises.

A cool little post, I found out several new things. The only thing I’m confused about is how you ‘smell space’ as it’s not really a situation where you can open a window and take a big sniff...

@galenkp - I see Sara has included the Lego hive community tag hive-142010 but the post doesn't appear to show up in the community.

Does the tag have to be in the first five to work? Or does the post have to be made on the beta community site to work?

It has to be the first tag in the list of tags. The post can be made from anywhere.

Very useful to know, thanks.

Presumably then you can't make one post go to two communities at the same time?

I don't think so but am not 100% sure on that.

The hive tag has to be the first tag you use for it to appear in the community I believe.

Thanks for using the Community tag #hive142010 but make sure you tag it first in the list of tags @sarakey

Hey, neat little post!

Certain foods (such as bread, instead of tortillas) are not allowed in space, and most commonly consumed are juices, fruits, meat and pasta.

I actually learned that the other day while watching Snoopy in Space!
