The shot that nearly got away

Just out of frame on the right of this particular beach is a tumble of rocks that extend out into the sea when the tide is in. The waves crash onto the rocks sending up a thick mist of salty spray into the air that you can smell but not see until the sun is low in the sky.

On this particular evening I'd already shot the slightly disappointing, hazy sunset and packed away my gear. I was just about to head back to my car when I turned around and saw a girl walking down the beach with her shoes in her hand. Without thinking too much I grabbed a couple of shots of the scene hand held and kept moving.

It wasn't until quite some months later when I was bored and flicking through the culled pile in Lightroom looking to see if I could free up some disk space that I found this image. It didn't look like much straight from camera but I was able to enhance the gentle pastel tones with a little editing and found that I really liked the result and I hope you do too.

From this experience I drew two lessons:

1. When fussing about with tripods, filters, remotes and long exposures etc. I sometimes get too focused on what's on the Live View screen and don't look around enough. Sometimes there's a great shot just out of sight!

2. I often rush to cull images as soon as I get back from a shoot and I should perhaps leave some time to breath and refresh my eye before diving into the editing process.
