It's been used in medicine for ages but since mid XVIII century is listed in professional literature and it is sometimes recognized as first modern medicine for heart related problems - it affects heart muscle, increases cardiac contractility and helps fighting various types of arrythimas. Contains whole bunch of so cardiac glycosides which in higher doses are very toxic - they also affect ocular nerves so you will see yellow after mild overdose 😛But don't try it at home...

I have seen it growing wild in Europe but it is not very common. More often is grown as decorative plant in gardens.

Wow; thanks for that info. Very good to know. As I said, it's all over the place in my local area. It's very interesting to photograph when there's so much of it.
