태울 수 없는 열정
토머스 칼라일은 실수로 불타버린 원고를 다시 썼습니다. 그가 쓴 프랑스 혁명사는 대표작은 아닐지라도 다시 쓴 그의 일화는 유명합니다.
도스토예프스키는 퇴고를 잘 안 하기로 유명했지만 초반 내용이 마음에 들지 않았는지 자신이 쓴 원고를 태워버렸습니다. 처음부터 다시 써 내려갔고 '죄와 벌'은 이 과정을 거쳐 러시아 문학의 정수로 남았습니다.
프란츠 카프카는 촉망받는 작가였지만 크게 성공하지는 못했습니다. 40세에 폐결핵으로 세상을 떠나기 전, 친구에게 남은 작품들을 모두 태워달라고 유언을 남겼습니다.
친구는 그의 말을 듣지 않았고 남은 작품들은 우여곡절 끝에 세상에 나왔습니다. 불에타 사라질뺀 했던 작품들이 결국 명작으로 되돌아왔습니다.
