client와 patient의 어원

client (n.)

late 14c., "one who lives under the patronage of another," from Anglo-French clyent (c. 1300), from Latin clientem (nominative cliens) "follower, retainer" (related to clinare "to incline, bend"), from PIE *klient-, a suffixed (active participle) form of root *klei- "to lean." The notion apparently is "one who leans on another for protection." In ancient Rome, a plebeian under the guardianship and protection of a patrician (who was called patronus in this relationship; see patron).

mid-14c., paciente, "capable of enduring misfortune, suffering, etc., without complaint," from Old French pacient and directly from Latin patientem "bearing, supporting, suffering, enduring, permitting" (see patience). From late 14c. as "slow to anger, self-restrained, having the temper which endures trials and provocations." From late 15c. as "awaiting or expecting an outcome calmly and without discontent." client 어원을 살펴보면 귀족으로부터 보호받는다는 뜻이 내포돼 있음. patient 어원에는, 우리가 알고 있듯이 고통을 견딘다는 의미가 있음.

내담자의 한문을 풀면 '와서 얘기하는 사람' 정도이기 때문에 client를 내담자로 번역하는 게 적절한지는 생각을 해볼 수밖에 없음. 이와 마찬가지로 patient가 환자로 번역되지만 환자의 한자인 [근심 '患']자에는 근심이나 고통의 의미가 담겨 있을 뿐 근심이나 고통을 견딘다는 의미는 내포돼 있지 않음.

상담 교과서에는 대체로 환자라는 단어보다 내담자라는 단어를 선호하는데, 어원만 놓고 보면 client보다 patient, 즉 환자가 교과서에서 지칭하고자 하는 대상을 가리키는 데 더 적합해 보임. 그렇기 때문에 Mindfulness and Psychotherapy라는 교과서에서도 client가 아니라 patient를 채택하고 있음.

하지만 한국어에서는 관용적으로 아파서 '병원'에 가거나 입원 중인 사람을 환자라 칭하기 때문에 근심이나 고통을 지닌 자를 환자라 칭한다 하더라도 내담자로 번역하는 게 더 자연스러울 수 있음.

영어를 번역하는 작업에서 오역은 어찌 보면 피할 수 없는 일임을 이런 간단한 대조만으로도 체감할 수 있음.
