인공지능의 연구는 컴퓨터의 출현과 비슷한 시기에 시작되었다고 할 수 있겠지만 이미 그 이전부터 오랫동안 다양한 분야의 학자들이 인공적인 두뇌의 가능성에 대하여 논의해 왔다.
1956년 미국의 다트머스대학에서 열린 다트머스 컨퍼런스에서 비로소 인공지능이 새로운 연구분야로 자리를 잡았다.
인공지능의 연구는 이후 많은 투자자들과 연구가들의 관심과 비난속에 몇차례 황금기와 암흑기를 거치며, 오늘날 인공지능은 다방면에서 4차 산업혁명을 주도하고 있다.
