Upcoming Trip: South Korea. What Is FISM?
You may well have read yesterday about my trip to South Korea in just 6 days from now.
To say I'm excited is an understatement.
A big part of the decision to visit South Korea this July was the fact that FISM was taking place.
So, what is FISM?
FISM is short for Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques.
In English, this translates to The International Federation of Magic Societies.
In other words, it's one of the widest reaching group of societies focused on magic (97 magic societies, both national and international, as well as national Federations which represent over 70,000 magicians from some 49 countries, according to its website).
Why is it so special?
It's a community for communities of magicians. Because of its wide-reaching, global nature, FISM brings together some of the best magicians from across the world, helping the art continue to develop and thrive.
What's not to like?
What are FISM's aims?
The FISM website suggests that its aims are:
- ...to be a leading platform, unifying magic societies from all over the world, committed to the enhancement, promotion and development of the Art of Magic
- ... to develop, elevate, promote the art of magic and to preserve the knowledge of the history of magic;
- ... to coordinate the activities of Member Societies, enhancing their authority and encouraging the exchange of reciprocal cooperation and services
- ... to fight against exposure and copies of acts, effects or inventions, presentations or original routines
- ... to organise international events such as the FISM World Championships of Magic and supervise Continental Championships of Magic.
So what exactly are the 2018 FISM World Championships of Magic?
The World Championships are an event that take place every 3 years and see some of the most talented magicians in the world perform and compete across a range of competitions
The 2016 event took place in Rimini, in Italy, while the upcoming 2018 event will take place in Busan, South Korea from the 9th - 14th July 2018.
Here's a look at a typical day of the 5 day magic conference, competition and convention:
What about the competitions?
There are three categories, Close-Up, Stage & Special.
Within these categories, there are a number of different awards:
- Close-Up: Micro, Card, Parlour
- Stage: Manipulation, General, Illusion, Mental, Comedy
- Special: Most Originality, [Best] Invention
Personally I'm most pumped to see the close-up; it's by far my favourite form of magic and from what I've heard the standard is incredible. Not long now!
Wow @goodwithtravels, I can only imagine how it is to see the best magicians out there together!
I've always liked magic, although I get frustrated for not knowing how they do all that hahahahha, well.... it's part of their show.
Keep us updated on your trip.
