요새 <알쓸신잡 – 알아두면 쓸데없는 신비한 잡학사전>이라는 프로그램이 인기가 있다지요? 유시민, 김영하, 정재승, 황교익, 유희열 등의 아재들이 박학다식과 입담을 무기로 재미있는 교양 수다를 선보이고 있다고 합니다. 제목이 내세우듯 알아둬도 전혀 쓸데없을 것 같은 지식들이지만, 듣고만 있어도 왠지 내 교양이 늘어나는 것 같고, 나도 다른 사람들 앞에서 잘난 척 할 수 있을 것 같고, 그러다가 아재들의 지적 수준에 열광하게 되는 프로그램이지요. 저도 그 기류에 편승하여 제 블로그에서 <알쓸재잡>을 소개할까 합니다. <알쓸재잡>이 뭐냐고요?

Nowadays a TV program is popular among Koreans. It's 알아두면 쓸데없는 신비한 잡학사전, roughly translated into Not-so-useful, Mysterious Encyclopedia for anything and everything. It's just a program where five experts (writer, brain scientist, novelist, musician, and food columnist) travel together to the countryside while shooting the breeze. Given the fact that they're experts in their own fields, the 'shooting the breeze' part can be very interesting, informative, and most of all, fun to watch. So, I'd like to borrow that concept to my blog and introduce Not-so-useful(for TOEIC test), Interesting English dictionary for anything and everything.

<알쓸재잡>은 바로 <알아두면 쓸데없는 재미있는 잡학 영단어>입니다. 영어단어라면 모두들 왕년에 지긋지긋하게 공부하셨을 겁니다. 저도 학창시절 영어단어 공부를 꽤 열심히 했습니다. 학교에 다닐 때는 단어장을 만들어 등하교하는 지하철 안에서 외우기도 했고요. 무슨무슨 단어집이니 Vocabulary 책을 사서 (끝내지는 못하고) 끄적이며 공부하기도 했지요. 이렇게 고생해가며 외운 단어를 도대체 내가 어디에 써먹을지 모르겠다고 푸념까지 해가면서요. 물론 그렇게 ‘고생해가며 외운 단어들’ 대부분은 이미 머릿속에서 지워지고 없습니다. 상황이 이런데 또 영어 단어냐고요?

I said not so useful, because those words I'd like to introduce won't guarantee high scores in TOEIC, TOEFL, or SAT test. Or they won't get you through a job interview. But then why do we have to know about these words? What good is it to know these words? Because it's interesting and fun to know. At least for foreigners who's learning English. - That's me. If you use the words day in and day out, you might not find them particularly interesting, but from a foreigner's point of view, some words are just plain interesting.

그런데 말입니다.

저는 영어로 소설책을 읽고 있는데요. (제 블로그에 올리는 독후감은 모두 영어로 읽은 것들입니다.) 영어 소설을 읽다 보면 재미있는 단어들을 종종 만나게 됩니다. 회화에 자주 등장하는 필수 단어도 아니고, 토익이나 토플 시험에 나오는 단어도 아닙니다. 다만, “아~, 이 말이 영어로 이거였구나.”하고 무릎을 탁! 치게 되는 단어들이지요.

회화에서 써먹을 일은 별로 없어도, 시험을 만점 받기는 힘들어도, 친구들 앞에서 잠깐이나마 으스대고 잘난 척할 수 있게 해주는 단어들이요. 일명, “알아두면 쓸데없는 재미있는 잡학 영단어”, <알쓸재잡>이라고 할 수 있겠습니다.

When I'm reading books in English, I often encounter interesting words. People don't use them in everyday conversation or they're not essential words for SAT. It's just that I-didn't-know-English-has-a-word-for-it kind of words. Words that you could find in Not-so-useful(for TOEIC test), Interesting English dictionary for anything and everything.

<알쓸재잡>을 알아서 뭐하느냐고요? 앞에서 말씀드렸다시피 친구들 앞에서 잘난 척 할 수 있고요(-_-;;), <알쓸신잡> 아재들처럼 교양 수다를 떨 수가 있습니다. 또한 <알쓸신잡>에 나와서 유명해진 단어 ‘사피오섹슈얼’이 있지요. 똑똑하거나 지적인 사람에게 매력을 느끼는 사람이라는 뜻입니다. <알쓸재잡>을 알아두시면 21세기 4차산업형 인간인 사피오섹슈얼들에게 인기 만점인 사람이 될 수 있습니다. (네, 사실 희망사항입니다…)

So, what good is it to know these words, you say? If you're foreigners who's learning English like me, then you can brag your new vocabulary to your friends. You could be the life of the party who everyone wants to talk to. A person who's fun to talk to. The love of every sapiosexual - people will find your intelligence attractive! (Well, at least we can hope.)

주의) <알쓸재잡>을 많이 쓸 경우 긍정적인 효과로는 “너 정말 똑똑하구나. 모르는 게 없구나.”라는 칭찬을 받을 수 있지만, 부작용으로 주위 사람들에게 “넌 뭘 그런 것까지 영어로 알고 있냐?” “그런 단어 알아서 뭐하니?”라고 핀잔을 들을 수도 있습니다. 😉

Disclaimer) If you use these words, people might be impressed by your knowledge and praise you. But on the flip side, your friends might reprimand you for knowing and bragging because those are not essential words for English learning students. 😉
