오늘 잘난 척할 단어는 Goose-step이다. goose는 ‘거위'이고, step은 ‘발걸음'이니, goose-step이라고 하면 ‘거위걸음'쯤 될 것이다. 한창 말썽을 피우던 중고등학교 시절, 혹은 군대에서 기합을 받을 때 오리걸음을 걸었던 적은 있어도 거위걸음이라니, 이건 도대체 뭐란 말인가.

The first word is Goose-step. What is Goose-step? We all know that geese fly, but surely they can walk and step since they have legs. But what is so special about Goose-step that they make a word for it? Not that it's a Duck-step in Korean. Do you know that there's a word 오리걸음 in Korean, which means Duck-step?

학교나 군대 다니면서 기합 한번 받아보지 못한 모범생은 없겠지만, 혹시나 싶어 알려드린다. 이렇게 쭈그려앉은 상태로 일어서지 않고 아장아장 걸어가는 게 오리걸음이다. 비슷한 말로는 '쪼그려 걷기'라고도 한다.

Duck-step is starting like this, squatting down position. While keeping that position, you have to walk. Yes, it's killing your legs. That's why they're using this to train or sometimes punish soldiers at army. But Goose-step is very different, except it's also used mainly in military.

그렇다면 거위 걸음은 뭘까? Goose-step은 군인들의 대규모 열병식에 종종 등장하는데 ‘(특히 군인들이) 무릎을 굽히지 않고 다리를 높이 들어 걷는 행진 보조, goose-step으로 행진하다'라는 의미이다. 명사와 동사로 다 쓰일 수 있다.

Goose-step means "Marching with legs straight and swinging high without bending your knees." You can see this kind of walking manner on formal military parades or ceremonies.

예전 프러시아에서 시작된 것으로, 독일군이 세계 대전 당시 사용하면서 널리 퍼졌다고 알려져 있다. 현재도 여러 나라의 군인들이 이런 방식으로 행진을 한다.

They say this originated in Prussian military, which later spreaded to the world since German military used it during wars.

무릎을 펴고 걷기 때문에 무척 불편히지만, 보는 입장에서는 잘 훈련된 군인의 절도가 느껴진다. 그래서 아마도 군이 잘 훈련되어 있다는 걸 과시하기 위한 열병식에서 자주 쓰이나 보다.

It must be killing them to walk like that, but it sure looks like they're well-trained soldiers this way.
