안녕하세요. 스토리 텔러 Haritson, @c1h입니다. 시사 이슈 영어로 말하기 <시슈영>의 두번째 스토리로 찾아왔습니다.

최근 실시간 인기검색어에 "종전"이 계속 랭크되고 있습니다. 아직 정해진건 없다고 하는데, 트럼프 대통령이 종전을 언급한 것으로도 이렇게 많은 관심을 불러일으키네요. 그리고 북한은 핵 실험을 중단하겠다고 발표도 했고....아마 곧 있을 정상회담에서 이에 대한 논의를 하지 않을까 싶습니다.

관련하여, 이를 주제로 외국인과 대화할 때는 어떤 용어와 표현들을 써야할 지 한 번 알아보겠습니다. 먼저 해외 기사를 토대로 살펴보도록 하지요!

North and South Korea are in talks to announce a permanent end to the officially declared military conflict between the two countries.

Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the confrontation.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un says he has suspended all missile tests and will shut down a nuclear test site.

Both countries have been pushing Pyongyang to denuclearise and they reacted positively to the latest development.

Kim has committed himself to the path of denuclearization and will now focus solely on economic growth and improving the national economy, the source said.

The decision to halt nuclear and missile testing comes nearly a week before the leaders of South and North Korea are due to meet in the Demilitarized Zone between the two countries.

"permanent end officially declared military conflict" 공식적으로 선포된 군사적 분쟁에 대한 영구적인 종료. (해석이 왜이리 깔끔하지 않을까요..ㅜㅠ) 기사의 느낌이 물씬 나는 표현들입니다.ㅎㅎㅎ

"~사이의 정상회담 일주일 전". 산 꼭대기로도 쓰이는 Summit이 정상회담이라 쓰이는군요! 예전에 제가 정상회담을 summit meeting이라 말했던 기억이 납니다...정상회담 회의. 라는 이상한 뜻으로 말하고 다녔네요 ㅜㅠ

별것 아닌데 이건 그냥 통째로 외워도 좋을듯 합니다.
joint statement
공동 선언문!이라 봐도 무방하겠죠? 이런 표현을 익혀두지 않으면 억지로 이상한 단어 끼워맞춰서 쓰게 됩니다. 제 머릿속에서는 connected, shared, common - claims, announcement, notice등 이것을 말하기 위한 요상한 단어들이 떠오르네요. 이런 것을 머릿속에서 고르는 것 과정이 말할 때 버벅거리게 만드는 주요인입니다.

Suspend (~에 매달다, 연기하다)와 Shut down이라는 동사를 썼습니다. 완전히 끝내는 것이 아닌, '중단', '뒤로 미루다'라는 뜻의 suspend를 쓴 것이 눈에 들어오네요. 예전에 야구 볼 때 Suspended game이라는 표현을 본 적이 있는데, (날씨나 특정 이유로 인해) 경기를 일시 중단하거나 뒤로 미룬다는 뜻이었습니다.

have been pushing('예전부터 ~ 지금도 (하고 있는 중의)' )현재완료 진행형을 썼네요. 우리나라에 없는 시제는 많이 보면서 쓰임을 익혀야 합니다. 비핵화를 동사형으로 denuclearise를 사용했습니다. 발음하기가 참 힘들어요 ㅠ 디-뉴클리어-라이즈!!

단어장에서만 봤던 halt를 실제로 쓰인 걸 본 적이 거의 없었습니다. ㅋㅋ이렇게 공부하니 좋네요. "중단하다"라는 뜻의 halt가 쓰였습니다.

다른 표현들은 위에서 조금씩 다뤘습니다. "실험을 하다"는 conduct a test! Test라는 명사와 Conduct라는 동사가 호응하네요.

핵을 포기하려는 의지. 핵무기를 nukes라 줄여서도 표현하네요.
