오늘의 영어 단어는 frogmarch이다. Frog는 "개구리"라는 뜻이고, march는 "행진"이라는 뜻이다. 그렇다면 이 두개가 합해진 frogmarch는 무엇일까? 개구리들이 아들 손자 며느리 다 모여서~ 행진이라도 하는 걸까?
Today's word is frogmarch. You probably already know what frog is. You know that green, jumpy thing living in the Sesame Street. And march is not a difficult word, either. Then what is frogmarch? Do frogs march on the Fourth of July? Is that what it is?
Frogmarch는 원래 '얼굴을 아래로 향하게 엎드린 사람을 4명이서 팔다리를 각각 잡고 나른다'는 뜻이다. 설명만 보면 사지를 벌리고 해부대 위에 누워있는 불쌍한 개구리가 딱 떠오르지 않는가(물론 개구리는 배를 위로하고 누워있는 거지만). 그런데 여기에서 더 나아가서 요즘에는 '(양쪽에서 두 사람이)팔을 뒤로 결박하거나 잡은 채 억지로 걷게 하다'라는 뜻으로 많이 쓰인다. 흔히들 범인을 연행할 때의 기사 사진을 머리에 떠올린다면, 그게 정답이다.
Frogmarch means "force (someone) to walk forward by holding and pinning their arms from behind (on either side)." If you think of two policemen bringing a suspect holding his/her arms on either side, then you guessed it right. Because suspects usually don't cooperate with cops, and they have to force them to walk by holding and pinning their arms. That is frogmarch.

도대체 왜 "(양쪽에서 팔을 잡고) 강제 연행하다"라는 단어에 뜬금없이 개구리가 들어갔는지는 모르겠다. 아마도 개구리가 이 사실을 알면 무척이나 억울해할 것이다. 왜 순수한 우리를 이런 불순한(?) 단어에 연결시키느냐고. 어쩌면 듣는 사람 없어도 날이 밝도록 우는 이유가 억울해서 그런 건 아닐까?
개구리가 울면 무지개 연못에 비가 올텐데 말이다.
I have no idea why frog was involved in this word. Because we all know that a frog is as innocent as a lamb. Or isn't it?
