Killerpix Entry: Ice Wraith
When I shared some of my recent harbor photos with my friends at @thewritersblock, they named them ice wraiths. I am entering this one in the #killerpix contest. The theme is triangles. Since these are natural ones, the lines aren't all perfect, but I think you can tell why I consider it a fair entry.
My ice wraith is a sea ice encrusted marker at the entry to the small harbor in Ålbæk, Denmark. Photo taken on 2 March 2018, just as we were leaving an extreme cold spell. Apparently it was even better a few days earlier, but as it was I was out in cold and snow with a flu and just couldn't handle it when I first wanted to.
So in addition to the triangular shape of the main ice-encrusted marker, there are also the cones of the icicles it is made of and that are formed on the edges of the concrete and stones.
Denmark is pretty far north--and Ålbæk is just a bit south of Skagen, the northernmost tip of Jutland, but we really don't get huge amounts of sea ice often. When my husband was a boy, things were different and he would go skating in the harbor in Skagen. But today Denmark doesn't even have an ice breaker ship anymore. They sold it.
This is my first experience with really dramatic sea ice. I've previously seen small bits along the water line at the beach, but nothing like the stuff I photoed that day.
My friends also think I need to use the ice wraiths as inspiration for a story. We'll see if I manage that sometime.

Image was modified a little in gimp--I'd needed to rotate it slightly because I had managed to hold the camera crooked (not a big surprise considering the wind and how sick I was). Then I cropped only to trim off the edges to make it rectangular again. Finally I desaturated and adjusted the levels. I considered both the color and the black and white version and I just like this one better.
