ketchup ketchup ketchup !!
Away visiting family, and bought this ketchup to go with our big bag of fries:
It stood out to me for some reason. Hellman's is a strong name brand, but they're known for their mayo. So it seemed good to see what their ketchup game is all about.
I couldn't find the price, but I noticed there was a coupon for $2 off. So why not; sold.
When we got back to the house, I noticed it said "sweetened with nothing except honey".
NoooOOooOoOOoooOooooo
That's the one thing I wouldn't want it to be sweetened with.
Since when do you have to check ketchup for vegan status?
All the ketchups sitting there in a Walmart Supercenter, and I picked one that isn't vegan. That's one for the memoirs.
Honey is as close to borderline as you can get. Some people who identify as vegan eat it. There are arguments for why it isn't harmful to the bees, if it's sourced in a certain way. Or something like that.
At the end of the day I don't really buy the arguments, but would easily eat it before meat and eggs and dairy.
And given the extenuating circumstance, and that it's just a sweetener inside of ketchup, it was tempting to just eat it.
If there were vegan gods or anything, I truly felt like they would say it's fine to go ahead and use the ketchup. BUT, for me it's more about wanting to keep the clear boundary.
Inevitably, I'm sure, I've eaten at restaurants who said it was vegan and screwed up or whatever. Actually, there was a time I literally started nomming down on fish because I'm a rube and didn't really know what I ordered and our server spoke so softly to the point of essentially being a language barrier and I thought the dish was mine. But it's different to knowingly cross a line.

I would like to know more about this story!
@misterhorse, if my spider senses are correct, I hung out with you shortly after this happened!
It was at a Japanese restaurant in Washington DC this past September.
It was "small plates". So my dining partner and I, captured by the foodie scene of D.C. (the scene that T Nick Farrell and all those chefs helped create).
I'm drunk right now in Puerto Rico.
Kind of forget where the story went or is going.
But anyways this waitress shows up and whispers something in barely English, so I just started eating.
And then she came with her body language and told me to stop.
But I had eaten like 3 of them.
ha! and your spider senses are correct. hope you're enjoying PR
great! Welcome to Steemit!!!
Honestly, I’m really surprised about your disappointment. Since I don’t remember, I’ve been using honey only, not at all sugar, as my sweetener. It’s definitely healthier than sugar itself. I think Hellmanss made a point it’s actually healthier. I’m not sure if honey interacts with vegan in any way. But since I’m not a vegan I might be wrong. Anyway, you can transact it to me if you won’t use it lol.
Ya, it's because of vegan.
Honey is bee regurgitations 😲 lol.
So it definitely isn't vegan insofar as vegan means just that it comes from an animal. Where there can be debate is whether 'cruelty' is involved.
In my mind it is possible to have cruelty free honey, if you sourced it in the wild and just found it. But "keeping" bees in your own artificial environment because you want the honey is something I don't want to be a part of.
It doesn't break my heart or seem excessively cruel like dairy or eggs. No visceral feeling really. But it counts, technically.
I am a full blown carnivore and there are times that I regret it. I don't regret my eating dairy or meat. What I regret is the fact that these products are not only polluted but the animals they come from are actually put through hell so we can get the food.
I am a firm exponent of the fact that meat should be a part of the diet but the sad truth is that in the last few years my own non-vegetarian consumption has dropped by 75 percent. This is due to the fact that we need to find a better way get our food (from animals or otherwise).
For me the act of consuming food is a spiritual one and I find that my heart and mind is not at peace with what I am consuming. Please note that I am not talking about the type of diet but rather the way we obtain it.
It's great that you're conscious of that. And ya, the farming process of animals is a whole layer on top of just killing them.
Being made to live a life of stress and suffering, in some artificial environment that they don't want to be in, is imo actually the worst part.
Hunting isn't great or necessary to me, but it's like 99% less of a problem than farming them.
Why do you think meat is a necessary part of the diet? Literally every nutrient in animal meat comes from the earth and can be found in plant foods. So it's just whether animal meat or plant and grains etc are the vehicle to deliver it.
It's probably not sustainable for too many people to hunt, or to eat grass fed etc. Quickly run out of space. You need to cram them into cages and all that if the whole world is going to eat meat.
Probably lab-made meat is the only way, if meat needs to be eaten.
Appreciate you sharing your perspective.
I am not a believer of only eating meat. It used to be my personal preference. I now understand that everything has to have a balance and for me that is allowing different constituents as a part of our diet.
Keep in mind that I also understand how skewed the food industry is today and the kind of crap they are selling, which obviously includes processed meat. As of now I strictly avoid processed meat. My personal consumption is primarily fishes and beef from farm and obtained from local slaughterhouse rather than a packed and processed one from super market. Back home, it was much easier to have my own mutton and sometimes I used to slaughter and make the meat myself. Since I have been living in Europe these days I meat cannot do that and that has pretty much put a stop to my meat consumption.
Obviously from my arguments you understand my viewpoint on it. We are omnivores and are very bodies are designed (from our teeth to our complete digestive track) to digest both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diet. I cannot in good conscience ask humans not to do what their bodies are deigned to do. But I do try my best to raise awareness about the crap that is being fed to us in the name of us being omnivores.
This all being said, I must admit that I also find a good vegetarian diet as tempting as the next guy. In the end it comes to personal choice I guess ........
That doesn't seem like it adds up. If we're designed for either, then we aren't going against our design to do one and not the other.
Our teeth could also be described as designed to eat tree bark, if you wanted to describe them that way. Just because you CAN digest something it doesn't mean you need that or are going against your design if you don't eat it.
What you're saying would be an argument for why we can eat meat or why it's not the worst thing or something along those lines. But I don't think that makes sense as an argument for why refraining from meat is bad.
By this line of thinking, you'd have to eat everything that you biologically are capable of eating.
There's literally nothing in your meat besides hard to digest flesh and the taste you like that you don't also get from plants. Every single nutrient is in non meat food.
Historocally we had to get our nourishment however we could based on what's available to you, and that's why we evolved as we did. But it doesn't mean you need meat if you have other options available to you.
This happens with a friend of mine too😃😃...he is a veagn and ordered aloo paratas ( some kind of indian vegetarian food) and I ordered non veg paratas. But the waiter exchanged our plates beacuse he don't know who ordered what. Even we didn't what we are eating. After eating everything waiter told us truth and I was ok with it because I'm a non-vegetarian guy. But my friend felt very embarrassed haha...😂😂
We have ketchups here too but I never buy them because they taste very bad. So my mother make some pickels made out of mangoes tomatos and tamarind which will be very taste and I feel like I'm in heaven when I'm eating those pickels😋😋. We are want we eat- so I eat home cooked delicious food made by mother.
Heheh, ya it didn't matter to you but your friend must not have been happy!!
😀 I like that.
The mango/tomato relish sounds good!!!
😃😃🤣
