Introducing Fiona Margaret Watson

in #jiujitsu6 years ago (edited)

Meet Fiona M. Watson, IBJJF Pan American 2018 Light-Feather Weight Black Belt Bronze Medalist, mentioned in Flo-grappling article below explaining how Fiona was to be facing a 3x No-Gi Worlds Gold Medals at the Pans:

https://www.flograppling.com/articles/6131874-2018-pans-black-belt-womens-viewing-guide.

Aside from this recent achievement, Fiona and her team at Notorious Mixed Martial Arts have won many NAGA's and other such Grappling/Jiu Jitsu tournements12122870_10205557512203677_6305400053838630877_n.jpg (Owned and operated by Fiona).
Fiona is not only a great competitor but a great instructor as well, her students compete in many competitions both MMA and Jiu Jitsu with a great deal of success.

Fiona is a student of Marcio Bittencourt, and as such displays great skill and technique, that mixed with her naturally aggressive style makes for a very exciting fighter to watch: great picture of them training here:

Marcio has been featured on this blog several times:

I first met Fiona at her own academy, Notorious MMA in East Rutherford NJ (Info at the bottom of the article), I was attending a seminar by Marcio Bittencourt and was invited by a friend who attended Fiona's academy. When I first walked in I felt very welcome by Fiona and her students and as I looked around I was very impressed by the look, feel and size of the academy. As the seminar went on I could tell Fiona was a no nonsense kind of person and a real hard charger, the kind of person who makes a great natural leader.
Some time later Fiona started to make some noise on the tournament circuit making her way inevitably to the 2018 Pan Americans and she even competed in some Pro NoGi super fights, but those will be articles for another day. In the video below the action picks up right around 35 seconds in (Not my video to edit, this video is owned by Fiona and I have permission to use it).
Fiona in the Yellow and Green Marker Belt coming out from the left, shakes hands with the Ref and her opponent and the match begins. Her opponent quickly pulls spider guard. Her opponent is obviously skilled in the spider guard. You can see Fiona trying furiously to free her arm from the spider control. Even though she was properly defending by turning her elbows out, trying to pull her opponents legs back and down, she was nevertheless unable to pass her opponents slick spider guard. After some time struggling against the this guard Fiona was momentarily off balance, but it was enough for her opponent to create a scramble which led to her opponent scoring with a sweep. However while this sweep earned her opponent 2 points, it ended her up in Fiona's guard which is a bad place to be, I know from experience. After a few minutes in Fiona's guard, her opponent struggling to make something happen looks utterly frustrated, standing up trying to open Fiona's guard. Fiona at first reaching under her opponents leg seemingly to sweep her opponent, but instead served to cut a sharp angle for an Armbar attempt. Fiona quickly lock in a very deep and extremely tight Armbar. Ms. Watson did not let up once her submission was locked in, her opponent ultimately was forced to submit or face serious injury. Once her opponent taps Fiona, realizing she had just placed at the Pan Americans was visually emotional, a testament of her passion to her goals. Passion is a great motivator and arguably the most noble of ambitions. Fiona was so ecstatic because not only was she able to medal in this prestigious competition but in doing so she submitted a world champion. She took out Black Belt Pati Fontes a champion with multiple titles to her name, including 3x No-Gi Worlds Gold Medals, this in itself is a great achievement and at such a young age this is only the beginning for Fiona on the World stage.

Great post. It's nice to see posts like this. I like seeing the other names in BJJ mentioned.

Same here, I have posted on several up and comers, only ones that I have met or trained with. Fiona is a tough one and easy on the eyes as well.

I noticed she is pretty actually! I think it's cool that she is a lady who runs her own school I would be interested in trying a class out but I am not really near NJ at all

Fight Club has locations in NJ, NY and PA so far.

I actually grew up in PA but I am down in the south now

well you are welcome to visit any time and we travel to VA for competition. Would be a pleasure to meet you.

I appreciate that but I am basically only ever local. maybe if I happen to be travelling tho

:) well the offer stands and if not, you can always share some videos.

when she teaches something she should definitely say "it's elementary!"

when I saw her at 3.25ish I know a perfect sweep for that spot!

Yeah, when your on the mats for a Pans Medal it must be hard to stay focused and hind sight is 20/20. But yeah I saw a few sports where a sweep would have worked but, that ArmBar closed the deal!

sure but everyone knows about the armbar I like the sweep I use because when I was repping it everyone said it wouldn't work and it basically always does so I'm like "bam!"

Well, slick sweeps are always appreciated, but Subs win the match and passing on a sweep to get the Sub is bold strategy and in this case, it paid off.
