ABOVE ALL things....
But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
James 5:12

Matthew 5:33-37
33 Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

I have read most commentaries on this verse and it seems that Eisegesis rather than Exegesis is the mode of interpretation. They seem to wish it did not mean exactly what it says and so interpret it accordingly.

Sware not AT ALL ..Neither by Heaven Earth Jersulam or even your own head. .

1. What happens if you sware to perform a certain task and fail for ANY REASON?

Many of the commentators refer to Paul invoking "God is my Witness " as swaring but that is a wishful stretch ..

Oh But God swore by himself... Another said..
Well I'm not Good and Neither are you so let's not compare apples with omniscience ..

This really is much more simple and direct than most Bible doctrines which is why it is most likely so very uncomfortable to our way of life . Go back and read both passeges again .. and be honest, well as honest as any compromising sinner can be, and ask yourself if there is any wiggle room in either of these statements for the saint of God.
