A roman aqueduct in Japan

in #japan8 years ago (edited)

Hi Steemians! This is the Nazenji-shrine in Kyoto:

If you stray a bit from the temple path then you will come across something which does not fit in with the Japanese landcape:

It is an roman-styled aqueduct! It was built in the 19th century during the Meiji Restoration. In this period Japan returned to imperial rule. During this era Japan wanted to follow the colonial and warfare methods of the west. This translated into using/applying western technology. This misplaced aqueduct is a result of these efforts.

With the arches in the center you can make a cool photo:

I am not sure if this building has any symbolic value because during the Meiji Restoration the capital of Japan moved from Kyoto to Tokyo. Tokyo became the front runner in the resulting Japanese industrial revolution. So maybe it was constructed as a symbol to show Tokyo that Kyoto is not less than Tokyo. But I am just guessing here.

If you are visiting Kyoto for a short period then this place is not really worth a visit. But if you are a history fan you might want to go there since (I think) it is one of the few buildings in Kyoto which is closely linked with the Meiji Restoration.
