I have always be impressed by dams. Huge monsters of engineering! I was also pleased to notice I visited most of those you mention in your post ^^
By the way, I didn't know those were called dighe in Italian, which is very close to the word 'digue' in French (which refers to the small stuff close to the seashore allowing for protecting the land).

mi hai incuriosito e ho fatto una piccola ricerca sul significato di diga. In francese digue, spagnolo e portoghese dique, germanico e olandese antico dike oppure dik o anche dijk; ha affinità in sanscrito con il termine deh-i. Deriva da plasmare, arginare o anche ammucchiare. Un intervento dell'uomo per contrastare le azioni della natura, come potrebbe essere un argine di un fiume o una barriera per le maree. Molto probabilmente venuta dall'Olanda che storicamente ha sempre lottato contro il mare.
Perdonami ma non sono in grado di tradurre in inglese una cosa del genere...

The proper word in French is actually 'barrage'. 'Digue' is much smaller and has a slightly different purpose.
