Grizzlies in danger
The US administration is back in controversy, proposing to legalize hunting of Grizzlies in the area surrounding Yellowstone Park.

The population of Grizzly in Yellowstone Park seems to be recovering from some years, after risking extinction. Now, however, a proposed law aiming to re-authorizing the hunt up to 24 specimens a year risks to nullifying past efforts.
Many important scientists mobilized against this decision, arguing that there is insufficient data to establish whether the population is effectively out of danger. The social dynamics of bears are indeed complicated, and population growth does not necessarily mean that they are out of risk.

Scientists have discovered that the roots release different types of substances depending on whether the plants are isolated or close to each other. I Grizzly in pericolo
Torna a far parlare di sé l’amministrazione americana che, questa volta, sta pensando di rendere nuovamente legale la caccia, seppur regolata, di Orsi Grizzly nell’area circostante il Parco di Yellowstone.

Da alcuni anni la popolazione di Grizzly nel parco di Yellowstone sembra essere in ripresa, dopo aver rischiato l’estinzione. Ora, però, una proposta di legge rischia di autorizzare nuovamente la caccia fino a 24 esemplari l’anno, vanificando così gli sforzi passati.
Molti scienziati si sono mobilitati contro questa decisione, sostenendo che non esistono sufficienti dati per stabilire se la popolazione sia effettivamente ormai fuori pericolo. Le dinamiche sociali degli orsi sono infatti complicate, ed una crescita della popolazione non significa necessariamente la fine del rischio.
La pioggia su Marte
Che su Marte in passato fosse presente acqua liquida è un fatto noto e accettato dagli scienziati. Ora i dati inviati dalle sonde mostrano che Marte possedeva un clima piovoso, con un’atmosfera calda, in cui il ghiaccio era meno esteso di quanto si pensasse finora.

Ovviamente non bisogna pensare ai monsoni terrestri. Si parla di una decina di centimetri all’anno di pioggia. All’origine del clima mite (ricordiamo che le temperatura media di Marte, oggi, è di -63 °C) ci sarebbero i vulcani, responsabili dell’immissione in atmosfera di grandi quantità di anidride carbonica, una molecola che provoca l’effetto serra e che contribuisce ad innalzare la temperatura dei pianeti.
Quando le piante comunicano tra loro
Si tratta di comunicazioni chimiche, avvengono tramite il rilascio di sostanze dalle radici. Quando tante piante sono vicine si viene a creare una vera e propria “rete” di comunicazione, usata per regolare il proprio sviluppo.

Gli autori dello studio hanno analizzato il comportamento delle piante di mais, scoprendo che la crescita delle radici è influenzata anche dagli stimoli meccanici a cui il fusto è sottoposto. Gli scienziati hanno scoperto che le radici rilasciano diversi tipi di sostanze a seconda che le piante siano isolate o vicine tra loro. In particolare è emerso che le sostanze chimiche prodotte quando le piante sono vicine tra loro portano a una riduzione del tasso di crescita delle foglie.
