The brain of the Neanderthal man
Some research groups have been able to develop some characteristics that is similar to those of the Neanderthal man's brain. The brilliant (and controversial) result was achieved through the use of the CRISPRa well known method for genome editing.

The Neanderthal man is a branch of homo sapiens, whose extinction remains a mystery. Studies that aim to understand the Neanderthal brain has always had to use models created on the basis of the morphology of the skull, but today thanks to the use of human totipotent cells and powerful techniques of genome editing and paleogenomics it is possible to recreate the whole organ, albeit in a little version. In the close future, this could allow us to study in depth what are the biological and functional differences between our brain and the our distant cousins.
The utility of the poliovirus
Using a genetically modified version of the polio virus, a group of researchers managed to influence the development of a particular type of brain tumor, known as the glioblastoma.

The poliomyelitis virus damages the nerve endings of infected individuals, and can also cause paralysis and death if not treated. By modifying the genome of the virus, scientists have managed to avoid these undesirable effects, causing the virus to act only on the cancer cells, leaving the healthy cells unaltered. The most surprising result was obtained between two patients, who have now a perfectly normal lifestyle, six years after treatment with the modified viruses. A result never seen for this type of illness. The history of the treatment of glioblastoma is rich in cases where the therapy initially embodies well, but has proved unsuccessful in the long term. This is why many other studies are needed to understand the real effectiveness of this treatment.
Antarctica is rising
The Antarctic ice sheet is rising at an unexpected rate of speed in respect to the sea level. This phenomenon will limit the melting of the glaciers, and consequently hinder the rise of the overall sea level.
Imagine CC0 Creative Commons - SourceThe immense mass of ice present in the South Pole lean on a real continent, the Antarctica, which like any other continent is subject to the movements of the earth's crust.Recently researchers have discovered that the rate at which Antarctica is rising is about 40 millimeters per year, quite a lot in geological terms. It seems that the rising speed is increasing over time, and that within 100 years the speed could be up to 3 times greater than today. Good news, is that this phenomenon will guarantee stability to the Antarctic ice sheet, with an effect that counteracts global warming.

Il cervello dei Neanderthal
Alcuni gruppi di ricerca sono riusciti a sviluppare dei mini cervelli umani con caratteristiche genetiche e biologiche molto simili a quelle del cervello dell’uomo di Neanderthal. Il grande (e controverso) risultato è stato raggiunto attraverso l’uso della metodica CRISPR per il genome editing.

L’uomo di Neanderthal rappresenta un nostro lontano parente, la cui scomparsa rimane tutt’oggi un mistero. Gli studi volti alla comprensione del suo cervello si erano sempre dovuti fermare ai modelli creati sulla base della morfologia del cranio, ma oggi grazie all’impiego di cellule totipotenti umane e a potenti tecniche di genome editing e paleogenomica è stato possibile ricrearne, seppure in piccolo, l’importante organo. Questo potrebbe permettere nei prossimi mesi di studiare a fondo quali siano le differenza biologiche e funzionali tra il nostro cervello e quello dei nostri lontani cugini.
L’utilità del poliovirus
Utilizzando una versione geneticamente modificata del virus della poliomielite, un gruppo di ricercatori è riuscito a influenzare il decorso di un particolare tipo di tumore al cervello, il glioblastoma.

Il virus della poliomielite danneggia le terminazioni nervose dei soggetti infetti, e può causare paralisi e morte se non trattato. Modificando il genoma del virus, gli scienziati sono riusciti ad evitare questi effetti indesiderati, facendo si che il virus agisca solamente sulle cellule tumorali, lasciando inalterate quelle sane. Il risultato più sorprendente è stato ottenuto su due pazienti, che a distanza di sei anni dal trattamento con i virus modificati, sono in grado di condurre una vita perfettamente normale. Un risultato mai visto per questo tipo di malattie. La storia della cura del glioblastoma è ricca di casi in cui la terapia faceva ben sperare all’inizio, ma si è rivelata fallimentare su lungo periodo. Per questo sono necessari numerosi altri studi per capire la reale efficacia di questo trattamento.
L’Antartide si sta alzando
La calotta Antartica si sta sollevando, rispetto al livello del mare ad una velocità inaspettata. La maggiore quota contribuirà a limitare lo scioglimento dei ghiacciai, e di conseguenza l’innalzamento del livello del mare.

L’immensa massa di ghiaccio presente in al polo sud poggia su un vero e proprio continente, l’Antartide appunto, che come ogni altro continente è soggetto ai movimenti della crosta terrestre. Quello che hanno scoperto i ricercatori è che il ritmo a cui l’Antartide si sta sollevando è di circa 40 millimetri all’anno, tantissimo in termini geologici. Ma non è finita qui. Sembra che la velocità aumenti nel tempo, e che tra 100 anni la velocità potrebbe essere fino a 3 volte maggiore di quella attuale. Una buona notizia, perchè questo fenomeno garantirà stabilità alla calotta antartica, con un effetto contrario a quello provocato dal riscaldamento globale.
