Photo contest: Flowers ~ Heliconia Rostrata ~ (Ita.~Eng.)
Ciao Steemians.. approfitto per ringraziare @steemotion per la sua bella iniziativa del contest dedicato ai fiori. Qui in Brasile é difficile fare la scelta di un solo fiore, visto le tante e splendite varietá presenti nel territorio. Io oggi ho scelto uno dei piú particolari e colorati, uno di quelli che mi ha ''stupito'', la prima volta che ne vidi uno in un giardino. Vi lascio ammirare la foto e sotto l'immagine, ho incluso una breve descrizione tecnica del fiore.

Hi Steemians.. I take this opportunity to thank @steemotion for its beautiful initiative in the contest dedicated to flowers. Here in Brazil it is difficult to make the choice of a single flower, given the many and splendid varieties present in the territory. Today I chose one of the most particular and colorful, one of those that amazed me the first time I saw one in a garden. I let you admire the picture and I included a brief technical explanation of the flower.
This large and beautiful flower is also known as the bog's bananas, or parrot, for the characteristic shape of the flowers that are reminiscent of the beak of the parrots. It is a tropical plant of the Heliconiaceae family, a tall trunk species that grows wild in the Americas, ''Brazil in my case'', but also in the Pacific islands. The type of inflorescence of this plant is rare compared to other heliconiaceae.
They are pendulous inflorescences and the length varies with the number of flowers. The red bracts, green and yellow, wrap and protect the flowers with very showy colors, intense and exuberant and more often than not, with contrasting tones. The flowers emerge from inside the bracts (modified leaf to protect the flower) and produce a nectar that serves as food for many birds, especially the hummingbirds, which contribute to the reproduction of the species.
They are considered geophytes, ie they reproduce not only for their seeds, but also for their specialized underground organs, whose main function is to serve as a source of reserves, nutrients and water for seasonal development.
If well fertilized and irrigated, this heliconia produces flowers throughout the year, but especially in the warmer months. For this reason it is very popular as a floral plant for ornamental gardens, and it is easy to meet here in Floripa in the city where I live.
