Left Facebook and Starting Anew with Steemit

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

I was at the lowest point in my life when I realized that leaving Facebook would help me. I'm not saying that Facebook caused me my depression but I experienced that it didn't help at all and even worsen the feeling. I kept comparing my falling life to the seemingly perfect life of my Facebook friends. The growing negativity and bashing in the community didn't help as well.

I decided to deactivate early this year and haven't visited the site since then. Surprisingly, I don't miss it and I feel much lighter without it. I still remember the anxiety I had before deactivating. There were fear of losing my online social identity. That seems exaggerated but I have lived in Facebook for years. My life was there and I was saying goodbye to it.

Having no more daily newsfeeds, I was able to choose topics that are relevant to me. This meant less time wasted and I am not forced to see and get obsessed with news that are irrelevant in my life. I became more productive and even got myself into cryptocurrency.

While researching about cryptocurrencies, I bumped into some interesting Steemit posts. I got curious as I've never seen this site before which seems to have a treasure of content. To be honest, I also got interested in the dollar amount attached to the posts and even the comments! That's where I learned that good content gets rewarded here. This is a good reinforcement for people to write useful and rich posts.

Lastly, I noticed that the comments were all positive and supportive. There were no bullying and bashing. I haven't seen harsh talk so far. The community seems warm and welcoming here. And that's it, I'm in!

Hoping for a happy journey in Steemit. <3

Thanks for posting! Glad your here on Steemit, I feel what you wrote about your experience with facebook and agree about the comparison. Since being on Steem I go on FB about 90% less and feel much much better already since most of the posts I find on here are positive and there isnt that comparison factor nearly as much! hope you enjoy it as well!

Cheers

Thank you for reading my post, silasdavid! It's encouraging to know your experience here. Facebook can be addictive and I had to deactivate to stop the endless "scrolling". Good for you that you are able to discipline yourself in the use of social media :)

I feel the same way, I haven't used Facebook in awhile.

Thanks for your comment @vaansteam With me being more active in Steemit, I doubt if I'll activate Facebook soon.
