What the money on a post means (For new Users)

Many of you may see a $ amount of money beside a post. There have been posts about this before but I feel I can explain it in a way that people who don’t know about crypto or steem at all can understand. (Also please correct me if I am wrong).

Say you make a post and it gets $100 next to it-
After 24hours, half of this can be turned into actual monete (so $50) and the other half can be “reinvested” to increase the power you have on the site. For instance you will have more power when voting, commenting and posting.

I hope I helped someone I just never understood this and always felt it needed a simple explanation for some people. Thank you and again correct me if I’m wrong.

Hello socynical! Welcome to Steemit! Hope you'll like the community here. As a start, here are 5 tips that we believe will be helpful to you:

  1. Keep your passwords safe: Unlike conventional sites, Steemit has 4 types of passwords. Each offers varying degrees of access to your account, so know where and when to use each of them. Also, make sure to keep them all safe and secure.
  2. Get Steem rewards: When writing a post, you'll have the option to choose how to receive your reward: "Default 50%/50%" or "Power Up 100%". As of this moment, choosing Default 50%/50% is the better option. But this can change over time. Check our post to know more.
  3. Upvote wisely: When upvoting, wait at least 30 minutes after the post is published to maximize your curation reward. Also, make sure not to upvote too much too fast so as not to drain your voting power.
  4. Know your Steem, Steem Dollars and Steem Power: Steem and Steem Dollars are the 2 main currencies here. Convert and power up more Steem into Steem Power so you can have higher values on your upvotes.
  5. Have Fun and Enjoy!

You've figured it out by now, but using the "introduceyourself" tag gets a ton of robot responses. It's sad really and one thing that's wrong with this place. That's the reason I take the time to look through the introduceyourself new section manually to look for promising new users such as yourself. Then I give them genuine and specific replies. Shocking, right?!

The payout is not exactly that way. You used to be able to change whether it was all Steem Power or 50/50. Since the prices are so low, they changed it to always 50/50. All that means is that your payout is split into half STEEM and half Steem Power. You don't get that full amount that you see though. Say the amount was 1 dollar even after the 7 day window to profit closes. That means you get 50 cents, and the people replying to your post get the other 50 cents. At least that's how I understand it.

If you plan to stick around, move all your STEEM into SP. The more SP you have, the more bandwidth you have. You need bandwidth to post and reply to other people's posts. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. I'll gladly help more!

P.S. Please stop using the introduceyourself post. It's considered abuse (lots of people abuse it for profit). Eventually, people who keep using it will be reported to steemcleaners.org's abuse report website.
