My Introductory Post--Hello From Appalachia!

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

HI EVERYONE!

This is my introductory post, and I’m excited to see it go live. I’ve heard great things about the Steemit Platform, and look forward to meeting many people here. I’m very active on social media so the whole idea of this online community intrigues me.

If you’d like to know more, click the website link below and go to the “About” page. There you’ll find links to connect with me on Facebook and Twitter. My given name is Rhonda, but I’ve published under the pen name “Diane Ryan.” I will answer to either. The pen name is not an attempt to conceal my identity. I intend to publish across diverse genres and platforms, and just as J.K. Rowling publishes her Cormoran Strike novels as Robert Galbraith so they can stand independently of her Harry Potter series, I will use different pseudonyms for a similar purpose.

I’m an author, an animal rescuer, and advocate for animal rights and social reform in Central Appalachia. Most of the U.S. and certainly most international communities are unfamiliar with modern Appalachia, with good reason. This is a closed culture, a “keep it local” world. When people think of “hillbillies”--which is not typically a pejorative term--a lot of stereotypes come to mind. Most of those stereotypes, of course, are untrue. But Central Appalachia, which involves regions of Southwest Virginia, West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky, is becoming branded with an unfortunate stereotype of its own. Every day I see deeper, more tragic issues develop in my own neighborhood. It’s heartbreaking and engenders a kind of frustration that words are inadequate to describe.

LOCAL BUT NOT NATIVE

I’ve lived embedded in the Southwest Virginia hills for a decade now, but I wasn’t born here. This is significant. I’ve been here long enough to write with authority about the people, customs, and issues. But I wasn’t born or raised here, so I didn’t grow up feeling pressured to show only the finished side of the quilt. I believe that problems in the stitching underneath should be exposed and dealt with, never hidden.

That kind of thinking is not popular in Central Appalachia. Better to just not talk about a problem, especially with outsiders. God forbid any secrets get out, especially if they make us look bad. Our local animal shelter has had a kill rate of 62% in recent years. It still ranked in the Top Ten of highest kill shelters in Virginia in 2015, and even though last year (2016) the kill rate was a much improved 22%, that still means slightly more than one out of every five animals who walked through the front door were carried out the back in a black plastic garbage bag. According to those who’ve worked there, shelter administration instructs employees to refrain from telling anyone that it’s a kill shelter. Many in our community believe our local shelter is no-kill. Seems like I constantly correct that misunderstanding and spent a lot of time pointing people to the VDACS website (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services) where the truth is displayed on their online reporting page. This lack of transparency is a staple of local politics, family units, and many personal relationships for those living in this region.

BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS

What I hope to do with a series of articles is give mainstream America and the rest of the world a glimpse behind the mountains. I want to raise awareness of the social issues here, shed light on the social decay that has eroded an entire culture in Central Appalachia. As one of the characters in my latest novel says:

“All those cute little stories about Appalachian culture and fiddles and moonshine and homemade quilts—that world is gone. We lost our heritage two generations ago. These days the only tradition we pass down to our kids is dependency. We’re addicted to drugs, alcohol, welfare, and coal. Sad, but it’s the truth.”

Regrettably, this does seem to be the case. I don't have any solutions at hand, but I do have my words. And I will use them to the best of my ability to impact the world for good, and inspire positive change.

I remember you posting excitedly on FB about Steemit (first time I'd ever heard mention of it), and now I am able to see what's what here too. Not that I'm slow on the uptake or anything, lol. :)

I absolutely love it here. Love it, love it, love it! Best community I've ever been part of. :-)

Welcome to Steemit from ROOMERKIND!

Thank you, sir! :-) Thrilled to be here.

From an Appalachian lost in the very odd world of Portugal, I bid you welcome! I was born in Appalachia, graduated from WVU to the delight and pride of my family, and have taken part in animal rescue around the world now. I'm from McDowell County, WV, the poverty porn best friend. It's also the place where the local animal shelter was investigated a few years ago because animals were left to starve to death.

Unlike the people it seems you've come across I'm quite happy to talk openly about the problems Appalachia, and the poorer parts of that region face. As ARC and other NPOs love to hand out money to the richer parts of the region in NY and further south, rather than the hardest hit communities, the struggles continue. Opioid addiction, poor education, and lack of jobs are just the tip of the iceberg and contribute to animal abuse and neglect in the region. Other problems arise from lack of motivation, resistance to change, and plain old stubbornness.

If you want to see real ideas, real sharing, from Appalachians, in their own words, have a look at this documentary. It has to be viewed on Chrome, I'm sorry to say, but otherwise, it's free. I am credited in the documentary, just so you know, and my partner appears in one clip.

Not all of us are closeted, closed-mouth, and unwilling to seek change. I moved an ocean away for just that. :)

PS: there is one area that still goes untouched, that I think needs addressing before any real good can be done in that place and I may be sticking my own foot in it here but, the rates of sexual abuse in the more remote areas of Appalachia goes unspoken about, seemingly unresearched, and certainly goes unaddressed. I hope that changes soon.

Oh my GOSH! The McDowell Co line is a stone's throw from my rescue. Seriously--take a left out of my driveway, zip over Big Stoney, and drop right down into War. You and I will have much to talk about and I am THRILLED to meet you here.

YES. You moved away--an ocean away--I'm willing to bet you found the world to be a whole lot bigger than anything you imagined growing up here.

The Russell County issue is BAD. Really, really bad. My post about that will have to come with a trigger warning. I've written a novel about it titled "High Kill." The headspace I had to get into to put all this horror on the page--my goodness.

Are you on Facebook? I would love to connect with you there, too.

I spent a lot of time all over the place growing up, my parents were economic migrants for lack of a better term. Europe hasn't been an issue for me, it's just beautiful and I get to learn bits and pieces of new languages. I also read a lot so I knew there was a whole lot more world out there for me to explore so I went out and found. I'm still finding it. Yes, I'm on Facebook, I just need to find a way to find you because I think I have mine closed to anybody but friends. :)

I just sent you a FB message on your author page. I found the link on your intro post. :-)

Awesome! I think we have it sorted now. :)

That HollowDocumentary is fantastic. It uses the new parallax web design technology--one of the best new innovations I've seen in a decade. Gave me chills. I'm going to share the heck out of it across multiple platforms.

You are dead on the money about the sexual abuse. I posted this morning about a sexual harrassment suit filed by a former ACO at the Russell Co Animal Shelter. I know the plaintiff. I also posted about a sexual predator at Lebanon Elementary School. I included my references in the article for verification.

I am THRILLED to meet you. Can't even sit still after your message. LOL

Hollow was near and dear because a fellow WVU graduate thought it up and made it happen. We actually made a response to Playboy about the article they did about McDowell County at the same time, which was kind of funny. (And yes, I do claim it as my one and only appearance in Playboy.) It was a great effort by a really dedicated young woman. :)

Keep up the good works.
Wishing you all the best,
@magick323

PS - I'm a songwriter, my last CD went to help several no kill animal shelters and other charities around the country.

Oh my goodness! I'm headed for your profile now. . . .

You might have to scroll down my wall a bit to find my music. I post a variety of things here. Nice meeting you. Followed.

The last photo in this post represents the songwriter in my latest novel, "High Kill." His name is Erik Evans, and he contributes a song for most chapters in the book. I had to write almost 30 songs for it. The text is a couplet from one of them.

Wow. 30 songs would take me five years! 😂

Well, just the lyrics. I mean, I have an idea about the melody, but I didn't write any music to go with them. LOL

I got a sang it ain't got no melody but I'm gonna sing it to my friends -

Heh. . .I've already followed the breadcrumbs. Rocking out to The Vampire Song right now. LOL

Congratulations! this comment won the Comment of the Day #21!! check out the contest post here.

Awesome! Thank you! I will definitely head over to the latest contest posts now, @awesomianist ! And thank you, too, @magick323 !

Ooooh I love performing that one live. Definitely a crowd pleaser!

Yeah, I would imagine so!

Ha! I'll bet "boatymcfoatface" was taken, but you cleverly spelled it anew to get the name you wanted. Usernames. No matter how clever and unusual I believe it is, it's taken. Hagfish, i found at random by opening the dictionary. TAKEN. My last name is always available. I was playing with carolkean when the steemit demon snatched it from the screen and declared it mine. There was NO GETTING IT BACK. Okay, on rethinking this, Bot is a cool short-form of Robot, and you probably weren't even trying for Boaty.... shame what happened to those Brits who voted the name, only to have the higher-ups stamp their feet and say "Too childish" for the big-a#s ship.

boatymcboatface is a witness on here, no relation to me :]

Welcome to the platform, I wish everything work out for you. It’s not easy here but not difficult neither but just ask an extra effort, engagement is the key good luck I’m @goodaytraders Start by following people and they will do the same.

Welcome! you will do well on here! I am already excited to see what you are going to post on here! Have a great evening!

Thank you for the very kind words! You have a wonderful evening, too. :-)

Rhonda, aka Diane, knows I've been her fan since we first met online via an internet writing workshop. Her prose impressed me from the start. I'm in awe of how prolific this multi-talented, many-careers woman can be. I hope the dog rescue slows down (more volunteers must come forth) so you can write the novel I'm dying to read: SPACE HORSES!

Carol, you are generous with praise, but may the world know--everything I know about writing, I learned from Carol Kean.

Pssst. . . I'm going to start posting the short story "Space Horses" here today. ;-)

You knew waaaay more than most writers do when I met you. All I did was suggest trimming out a wee bit of excess verbiage, or something trivial. You're a genius, with a voice like nobody else's!

Welcome @rhondak to the community, you will fit right in here and I am looking forward to your posts. Love Virginia and the lovely mountains.

Thank you so much, @sunscape ! I do think I will love it here. :-)

I am sure you will be happy here, people are very friendly and supportive.

It definitely sounds like my kind of crowd! I am SO TIRED of negativity. It wears you down fast. So I'm starting to feel pretty excited about this platform.

I think you will really like it here.
