sciencefriction - short, thoughtful sci-fi stories from India

in #introduceyourself7 years ago (edited)

Hi! I'm new here, and this is my first post.

My name is Prateek Arora, I currently work with a comics and animation startup in Bengaluru, India and i'm a huge science fiction buff. I've recently started writing some science fiction short stories about the rapid changes that technology is causing in Indian society. India's total smartphone user base is going to double to 600 million by 2020, and for a lot of users this will be their first contact with any sort of networked device. Although technology is going to have a strong positive effect, the opportunities it will create will not benefit everyone equally, and a lot will change. These stories are a way for me to understand these changes better. This publication is very much in its early days, and I envision it to be an open and collaborative space for original voices in Indian sci-fi writing stories for an audiences both local and global.

You can find the first two stories, as well as everything new we will publish at https://medium.com/sciencefriction

Thank you! So do you :)

Hey Prateek, welcome to Steemit :-)

Will you republish the stories here?

Yes, I think I would like to. Do you think such stories would find an audience on steemit?

I don't know. Only way to find out is to try.

Yes of course. I think i will :)

That's pretty cool! I remember reading once about a company that was promising (was it 6 or 8 $ USD smartphones), not sure how that worked out but it seems like many of the un-banked there will benefit by being able to purchase cheap smartphones that allow them to connect to the internet of things. :)

The future is already here — it’s just not very evenly distributed.

Haha, the beginning of your story is something relatable to many block-chain start-ups. :)

Looking forward to reading the stories and welcome!

Oh I was actually able to find the post I was thinking of:

Yes, that whole thing turned out to be a bag full of gas. Turns out someone was just putting Indian flag stickers on the cheapest Chinese-made smartphones he could find and pass them off as new. There's always one guy...
The Indian smartphone market is extremely competitive currently. Pretty much every major brand in the world is trying to fight it out. There are 4 major price brackets - The 100 Dollar Smartphone, 250-300, 400-450 and then 700+, where Apple, Samsung and the Google Pixel are currently fighting it out.
