Steemit gives me hope, I have been working 7 days a week for the past 8 years as a newspaper deliveryman (still is) here's what I do for a living

Yes , you might wonder if it's even possible to work 7 days a week. Well, when you have no choice because your work is based on spreading the news around the city you end up used to it.

Here in Canada, we have multiple newspaper media networks. Most of them delivers 6 days a week but unfortunately for the past 8 years I have been working for the only one providing newspaper every single day of the week. My only days off are around Christmas time the 24 and 25 and around the New year the 1st and 2nd.

What you need to know about this job is you can't just call sick, if you are sick you need to find someone to take over the night shift for you and you will just end up losing your job. Can you imagine not going working one day and having over 400 customers call the newspaper center complaining about the fact that they didn't receive their newspaper?

The worst part here is when customers don't realize that we work all year long, in the cold , in the snow or the heavy heat! Most of my customers never tipped me a single $ all year long, they don't deem my work as a service obviously or they just don't care and think that I am paid enough.

If you live in Canada/Montreal and wonder what newspaper is this, we are talking about "Le journal de montreal" Yes you probably read it everyday, either on paper or online. Because it's the biggest one in here and obviously we are not important enough to be allowed a couple of days off from time to time.

You can imagine how tiring this work can be right? Riding all night long in multiple areas getting out of the car reaching every single house individually and coming back in. Newspaper delivery isn't what it used to be anymore, so everything is done trough your car if your lucky and you only have a couple of journals to deliver you can walk it off around your area but that rarely the case since having over 400 journals every night means tens of kilometers to go trough.

When I first started It was the hardest job I have ever done, the worst part is to find every single adress when you don't even know the area. What takes me 5 hours a night to do today, took me 10 when I first started. Can you imagine working 10 hours a day for 7 days a week? It felt like I was about to die lol. But as the time go trough you get used to it and adapt your lifestyle to it.

Now that I discovered Steemit, It helps me relax a bit more. Make an extra income and possible build my steempower. I feel like I might be lucky to be in this community as an early bird knowing the rest of the world are probably clueless about it and I hope I will be able to take advantage of this in order to be free of this 7 days a week job some days!

Cya Steemians!
Your news paper delivery man!

Sort:

I used to sell the newspapers in grocery stores. That was difficult and I wasn't very motivated by all the nasty, negative comments. But really, my question ..... do people still read the printed newspaper? Long live the Steem!!

They do, and it's a huge business! Here I get news clients every 2-3 days some of them stops but the ratio is going up for my area. At some point ill have to drop an area if it keeps increasing like that. But I believe the newspaper time is about to end in the next 10 years. Most of my customers are old people that arent really into the internet/ The next generations are much more into the internet and social medias which will lead the newspaper industry to go down in my opinion. I already saw a local news paper stop last year and turned over social networks and ad revenue online to advertise their content.

Thank you, I am already a member here I just wanted to share my little story after more then a week into steemit.

That is not an easy job you have. Admirable the hard work you put in, without a break no less. Good luck to you with Steem.

It really has become a lifestyle, at first I had 0 social life but then I developed a better control of my time and energy toward it which allows me to actually go out with friends from time to time (always during the day)

Welcome to your new job, Mr. Newspaper Delivery Man.

lol I wish steemit could be my new job

Welcome to Steemit!

Enjoy your stay!

I have a friend who delivers newsprint 7 days a week. He works 10-12 hours a day. He makes pretty good living but man that is too much work for anybody.

10-12 hours?!? That's hardly sustainable for his body and his social life. I could do more hours too but in the long run you start valuing your life more then the money.

Sounds really tough! Congratulations for your persistence. You've gained a lot of strength at that job.

Hey Diana Thank you!

Hey man, those Montreal winter mornings are really rough. But why didn't you move to another job ?

They are cold indeed! I tried, Seems like I did not qualify or maybe I haven't tried hard enough/

Well best of luck my friend. I am too from Montreal

thank you I appreciate this!
