Hello (The Tragedy of William Harrison: Chapter 1)

in #introduceyourself7 years ago

Hello. I'm an aspiring writer. I came across steemit in a Meetup. I lurked. I clicked. And felt this was a great outlet for the stories I'd like to tell. I admit I should be a little more descriptive in who I am and what I do. But I have a story I just need to get off my chest!

On a dark winter night outside TeleCom in Manhattan, a security guard named Samuel comes to relieve the watchman. In the heavy darkness, the men cannot see each other. Samuel hears a footstep near him and cries, “Who’s there?”
After both men ensure that the other is also a guard, they relax. Cold, tired, and apprehensive from his many hours of guarding the entrance, the watchman thanks Samuel and prepares to go home.

Shortly thereafter, Samuel is joined by Kent and Robbie. Kent is another guard and Robbie, the building manager. Samuel and Kent have urged Robbie to stand watch with them, because they believe they have something shocking to show him. In hushed tones, they discuss a ghost they’ve seen the past two nights, the ghost of the recently deceased Henry Harrison, which they claim has appeared before them on the station rails in the late hours of the night.

Robbie is skeptical, but the ghost suddenly appears before the men and just as suddenly vanishes. The ghost of Henry Harrison was slender, barely fitting in his tarnished suit. Terrified, Robbie acknowledges that the specter does indeed resemble the dead CEO, that it even wears the tie Henry Harrison wore when he acquired companies, and the blank expression he wore when he laid off employees. Robbie declares the ghost must bring warning of impending misfortune to Telecom, perhaps in the form of bankruptcy.

The ghost materializes for a second time, and Robbie tries to speak to it. The ghost remains silent, however, and disappears again just as the pigeons chirp at the first hint of dawn. Robbie suggests that they tell William Harrison, the dead CEO’s son, about the apparition. He believes that though the ghost did not speak to him, if it is really the ghost of Henry Harrison, it will not refuse to speak to his beloved son.
