Google Maps app now shows barrier-free public transport journeys

Google Maps for smartphones is becoming more wheelchair-friendly. The app now has started showing whether wheelchair users can use a connection in public transport networks without additional assistance.

The appropriate setting can be found in the app’s route options and is accessible via the three-point menu in the upper-right-hand corner of the screen.

The app can currently display barrier-free routes with data from local public transport authorities for the cities of London, Boston, Mexico City, Tokyo and Sydney. The features is set to be rolled out for additional cities over the next few months.

The web version of Google Maps has been able to generate wheelchair- or stroller-friendly routes for some time. Still, Google notes that the results displayed could be partially incorrect, as some of the information shown does not come from official sources. — dpa
