Traveling through time with one foot in the future and one foot in the past

in #introducemyself7 years ago (edited)

My life is an unusual one and I wrote a little about this before in my first introduction post and subsequently in the day my software sparked massive IT disruption. The latter post made over $80 and got the attention of several whales and was listed in Hit Parade. I've already written extensively about the future and about cryptocurrencies, but what I want to talk about here is the past.

Many people don't have a long history, but for some reason I've arrived back at the beginning again. This started to happen around 2012 and I finally settled back to my roots the following spring. My ancestry in this area goes back to 1808 to Ephraim Manwaring in Mexico, NY and the house that I live in now was built around the time of the civil war about 5 miles to the northeast of Mexico, NY. When I was young, I lived in a small trailer on Manwaring Rd until the house was built.

Upstate New York is a very backward place. Food is very limited in terms of variety. Getting to a grocery store like Trader Joes (my favorite when I was out west) is about an hour's drive one way to Syracuse. We farm most of our own food now and only go for those things we don't grow. The Amish have arrived here en masse as well. You're as likely to see those black horse driven carriages as you are to see cars around here. The old ways have come back.

When we were young, everyone wanted to go into the city. Farm life was considered "boring" and a dying profession back in the 1960's. Those who stayed, modernized their equipment. About 20 years before I was born, Manwaring Rd was a dirt road and not very wide...

My father was the youngest of 8 children, 7 sons and 1 daughter. Aunt June with one of her cousins (last name North, first name unknown))

I now stay in the same room that my grandfather died in back in 1945. His name was Ora, born Aug 21, 1888. His room was just behind aunt June lower left.

Dad and I just finished canning tomatoes for the winter and have been chopping wood and loading it into this woodshed (not with the oldsmobile though, that car's long gone).

For a while in the 70's and 80's, Dad used to heat this place with oil. Nobody's doing that anymore around here. We've been burning wood since the 1990's (another step backward in time).

Because this place was around for a century before I was born, I'm surrounded by ancient things. My grandmother who died in Oct 1979 still gets mail at this address. So now I sit roughly where my grandmother used to sit typing on a machine several decades ahead of her time. One of my gerbils (Dusty) contemplating whether to chew on one of my USB cords (they're all gone now - RIP).

So while I'm surrounded by people who for the most part have completely rejected technology, I've been programming astrology software and studying cryptocurrency software architecture. It's a very strange anachronism, but if the US economy collapses sometime in the next few years, I will be shut off from civilization and holed up.

We've allowed banking parasites to run amok in our political system and that system is dragging the USA down into the abyss of a military empire. After this collapses, you miners running crypto nodes will be the key to preserving the future.

Hey there

@zoidsoft - I haven't walked through a lovelier place in America since Harrison Ford saved the lives of Kelly McGillis and her son in the crime thriller film, "Witness." You have tucked yourself away in a perfectly picturesque spot for preserving the old ways and the family history when America ultimately slides into the abyss. Thank you for sharing this precious treasure with us. Will you adopt your fellow Steemians and allow us to come and live with you when it all goes down? We just want to go home to Tara.
