Tech & Internet has Influenced Me and Probably You Too

in #internet5 years ago (edited)

It’s weird to think that there used to be a time when the technology and the internet was not as involved in our lives as it is today. But here we are, spending the majority of our days wired into something whether it be our phones, tv, game system, laptop, etc. Have you ever sat down and wondered and took note of exactly how the tech around you has affected the way you behave and think as a person?  I have. In fact, here’s a list of some of the things in my behavior that are because of the internet and tech. Maybe you share some of these traits with me? If so, I’m glad you feel me.

1. My Sense of Humor

I’m going to be that guy…. Memes.
Memes are such an integral part of today’s internet culture. An interesting part about different memes is that they commonly refer to either other memes, pop culture, or current news/events. I know for a fact that my sense of humor would be rather different if memes were not as they are today. The funniest part about memes is that they commonly on reach a certain demographic depending on either the content involved, their age, their creativity, and so on.
If you ever want to communicate using humor with a specific audience, try thinking of a meme you’d believe they can connect with.

2. My Distractibility

If by the time you’ve made it down this far this post and you haven’t received some sort of notification, an email, a call, or anything, then congratulations. Take a second to appreciate this moment. Being bombarded with ads, notifications, texts, emails, and calls has become such a part of life that many of us of have traded our ability to focus to compensate. Over the past few months, I’ve had to make a conscious effort to place my focus on certain tasks at a time. As someone who enjoys taking in information 24/7, it’s not an easy feat. Why should you care more about REALLY focusing on the task you have at hand…?

It may seem like small things like a notification does not take all that much time at the moment, but it all adds up. Before you know it, despite having tried to get that homework assignment done, make progress on a project, or plan out your schedule, you’ve lost 2 hours of your time trying to get rid of those notification bubbles.

3. My Productivity
At the end of the day, tech’s main purpose is to increase our productivity and efficiency. So it’s no wonder I’m mentioning it. Though it can all be a distraction, there are solutions out there to help make managing all the info you’re bombarded with easier. Personally, I’m a big fan of using Alexa, Siri, and other voice command tools. I already do so much typing so if I can find ways to not but still have a way to note important ideas and plans, taking advantage of that is a guarantee.  I’m also a fan of using apps (for obvious reasons). One app I’ve actually been geeking out over is the app, Band.
If you are on a team and want an efficient way to communicate, make sign ups, assign tasks, and so on… I highly encourage Band.
The even the way the app flows and is designed has inspired and influenced me as a developer. I love it and I hope you do too. It’s not only way too convenient, it’s also free.

Technology is the devil disguised as a savior ;)
It's making people become increasingly out of touch with themselves and conditioning their minds into believing whatever they consume online. Confirmation bias is nowhere more present than in the virtual world.

Haha, don't even get me started on confirmation bias now.
It's almost as though each of us are living in our own world's that only validate what we believe to be true. Especially with how ads and content are curated specifically to you.

Exactly!! Anything to monopolize our attention as much as humanely possible.

Not to mention technology has made tasks easier to do. Take for example shopping - without internet and technology, you would have to hit the streets for a while hoping to come back with the items you want... Now shopping is straight forward and faster.

True... To make it even easier, now we have things like doordash, instacart, and postmates just so you don't even have to leave your home for that stuff.

Makes me think of Wall-e
