How To Finish What You Started

in #inspiration6 years ago (edited)

Do you have multiple projects but never finish them? Do you get excited when you start something new but then lose interest during the process? I’m sure it happened to all of us. In this article, I will go through some of the How’s and Why’s to consider if you want get things done.

Find the true motivation

Think about the motivation that made you start in the first place. Is it something you are passionate about, or are you only doing for the profits? Is it something you need to do, or is it disposable? Are the reasons for doing it good enough to keep you going? Find the answers for these questions to discover your true motivation.

No ideas are good until you get them out there

Cover_Ideas.jpg

Everyone has ideas and everyone thinks they would be great if someone ‘worked them up’, but what happens when we don’t work on these ideas? Well, they’re nothing but thoughts in our head. No one will be able to reach or see them, so it’s like they never existed.
Success requires a lot of time, effort and confidence. If you’re passionate and believe in your idea, go for it and don’t be afraid to fail/go out of your comfort zone. Do what it takes to move forward.

Be realistic about your projects

If your project doesn’t match your unrealistic expectations, you may get disappointed and want to quit. Planning and researching is the key to set the right expectations.
When you know what steps you need to take to achieve your goal, you will be more focused and willing to complete it.

Baby steps

You might get overwhelmed about all the work you have until you can see results from what you’re doing. If you set yourself small steps and goals, each of them will be little successes. Completing secondary goals will also give you the motivation to keep going.

As I mentioned on my 5 Things You Can Do To Be Or Feel More Productive post, rewarding yourself after you completed a step is important, as it keeps you motivated.

Don’t try to be perfect. Nothing is.

Accept the fact that what you imagine at the start won’t always be what you get in the end. Don’t feel unmotivated if things don’t go the way you wanted. Set yourself the goal of finishing your projects, even if they’re not perfect. Succeeding in life comes from learning, and learning comes from practice.

Base your work in the Agile Methodology. According to this article:

These [Agile] methodologies are rooted in adaptive planning, early delivery and continuous improvement, all with an eye toward being able to respond to change quickly and easily.

Agile is a way of working that consists in multiple iterations/improvements of an early release of a project. In practice, it means you get something out there, even if it has flaws, and improve it thought time.

Hope you find these tips helpful. Do you have any other tips on how to stay motivated and finish what you started? Do you have any projects you didn’t complete? Would love to know!

Really found the baby steps and agile approach insightful. I will use these on my 'next idea' :) thanks for the Post.

Thank you! :) looking forward to your 'next idea'!

Now all I need to do is think of it, lol.

Great post! I do find it hard to keep my motivation once I start something. Especially working towards losing weight. That is the hardest thing. It is hard to keep the proper mindset for it too.
I have never thought about rewarding myself as a way to keep on going. Gives something more to look forward to. I think its a great idea.
Thank you for this. It is something I needed at the right time ^_^

Oh yes, rewarding yourself is a way to keep you motivated and challenge yourself to achieve your goals :) I do it all the time! Aww it makes me really happy to know that my post cheered you up! Thank you for you comment :)

Motivation is the basic fuel that drives us towards our goals ... A man without motivation as a car without fuel ... This is really one of the most useful articles I have read in steemit ... I always like to motivate people ..... and motivate them to do something good in their lives. .. wonderful topic I vote for you and follow you to more of these articles

Thank you so much @hazem90 !! :) I’m glad my article inspired you somehow. Motivation is really important as it keeps us going. I’m following you too and will have a look at your content. :)

Don't procrastinate like I do haha but great reminders

Hahah true that’s a good tip :)

Have been experiencing how hard achieving is, and how hard keeping myself motivated can be! these are great tips... thank you @julimattos, post like this just remind me to focus and get back in track... there is so many distractions, so easy to lose ourselves.. blessings

Thank you so much for your comment. I'm glad I could remind you to focus and keep motivated! It's ok not to be motivated once in a while, it happens to all! Being able to get out of your comfort zone and doing things that will keep you motivated/fulfilled is a great thing. Glad the tips help :)

I'll have to look into the Agile Methodology. Thanks for the motivation. I am finding I do better if I set finite amounts of time to work on certain projects. It helps me focus all of my energy on one thing instead of trying to do too many things at once and not succeeding at any of them. :)

Oh yes, definitely. I also got in the ’trap’ of trying to do way too many things at the same time and ended up not doing any in the end. Focusing in one thing at a time is a good tip to follow! Thank you for commenting :)

Absolutely! I'm still working honing my focus, but I'm getting better! 😀
