Fairytail is one of my favorite anime of all time. There is one episode in Fairytail where Laxus Dreyar, grandson of Makarov Dreyar, used Fairy Law in his battle with Natsu Dragneel - his comrade who shares the same guild mark.

Fairy Law is a spell that annihilates what the user acknowledges as enemy. However, upon using it against Natsu, the spell didn't had any effect. It's because his heart still knows and remembers his comrade although his mind acknowledges them as enemy.

This goes the same with reality, you may severe ties with your friends and loved ones to the point, you don't want them in your life anymore, and you hate them. But deep inside you still care for them because your heart remembers all the bond and love you've shared together.
