PC: The Atomism Of Speech

in #informationwar6 years ago

The enormous wave of focus and attention on so called "political correctness" is in itself a sign of the underlying problem of the atomism of society, caused by decades of praising the individual, individual freedom and individuality.

Be inclusive. Be inclusive. Be inclusive. It's like this message is being pounded into our collective heads via the corporation-ruled media. The so called political left in the western world has succumbed to this brainwashing, and is repeating the message to the further detriment of normal social discourse; one of the more ridiculous examples is a university that actually abolished applauding and cheering during speeches, to prevent individuals from feeling left out. This article by fellow steemian @ancientknowled3 says it all and is part of my angry inspiration to write this little rant: Are we going too far?. Jordan Peterson greatly exaggerated the effects of the new Canadian hate speech laws, but still it borders on the insane to address people you don't know by their preferred gender-denomination. Call me old fashioned, but if I don't know you, you're a boy, a girl, a man or a woman. Period. And if you're by chance a hermaphrodite, well, lucky you.

Now I am all for behaving politically correct, so don't get me wrong here and forgive my odd sense of humor. I think it's just good sense in any discussion to try to sympathize with any discussion partners present, and to take into account their sensibilities; this should come as no surprise to anyone I hope. We all want our message to be heard, so scaring away or unnecessarily upsetting your intellectual sparring partner isn't helpful at all; trying to be somewhat politically correct could therefore well prevent the mental barriers to be raised in your opponent's head. And if a transgender wishes to be addressed as miss instead of mister, I will comply to my best ability, but please don't crucify me if his... sorry, if her low bariton voice sometimes causes me to make a mistake. Just be reasonable, that's all.

I am a social justice warrior for the same reason I try to behave myself in an accepting and inclusive manner in discussions; I'm surely not a social injustice warrior. Of course I want racism, homophobia and the likes to disappear, it's a noble goal to reach for in my opinion. This goal will never be reached however, by introducing yet another dichotomy in an already heavily splintered and polarized society. "We are the people who have taken upon them-self the daunting task of fighting for inclusion, and you are either with us or you are our sworn enemy." This is SJW's real message and that's a shame and utterly unproductive.

Ultimately this is yet another evolution in ultra-individualism. Slowly but surely everything and anything to do with community is being demolished in the name of empowering the individual. This trend has now managed to poison even the lofty goals of equality, cooperation, peace and social justice, traditionally heralded by the political left. These days it's like they care more about being right than being effective, screaming "be inclusive!!" on the top of their lungs, not realizing they stand on one side of a social chasm so deep and so wide, that the sound of their voices never reaches the other side. And it's a chasm they dug themselves by placing rights of first minorities, and ultimately individuals, above the rights of the main population that consisted of basically reasonable individuals, before the polarizing propaganda on each side of any imaginable subject was made such an essential part of modern media.

I take an unpopular view, not endorsed by either side of this particular chasm, and blame today's oversized focus on individualism. Therefore I'm now going to say the unpopular thing and remind you all that you're worthless. You're worth as much as myself, which is nothing at all. As unique and beautiful we all are, this is what we share: alone we are nothing, nobody. Without a community of people to acknowledge our uniqueness and beauty, to value us for our actions and thoughts, we might as well be dead. Whatever you do, whatever you say and whatever you think, keep in mind that you're not alone, remember we all share the same planet and breathe the same air. You're not alone; be happy about that, cherish that, dammit.

Maybe that was a bit much... And maybe the first video is a bit much. Sorry about that. It's just that I get so mad sometimes when looking at the state of humanity, I sometimes just have to get it of my chest. I'm going to relax now, sleep a couple of hours and get up at 07:00 AM to watch the Formula 1 race in Japan; Suzuka is one of my favorite circuits in driving games and Dutch racing-wonderboy Max Verstappen qualified third. Boy that was quite unrelated... I'd best stop now. I'll leave you with a lovely little speech by Stephen Fry against PC speech.

Thanks for all the support @commonlaw and @informationwar! :-)

Promoting individualism is a political power weapon used to destroy communities and families, the only true opposition.

It is not so long ago that community and family was our protection for sickness, old age, etc. So we served the community/family.

Now the state takes care of our health and pension so we serve the state, an awful truth

EXCELLENT ARTICLE Winston
So glad I inspired you, if it was out of anger lol, to write this.
That was exactly what I was hoping would happen when I wrote that article.
We, as a society, continue to fracture, to splinter every day
We must label everything, define it into smaller and smaller groups.
Point out the differences, no matter how minute, in order to "celebrate" them
This is the opposite of inclusion, the opposite of community.

Thanks @ancientknowled3, for the inspiration and the response! :-)
