BPA-free plastic not safe either finds study

in #informationwar6 years ago

A team of researchers from the School of Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University tested BPA-free plastics on lab mice and found detrimental effects on their sperm counts and ova health.

BPA is short form for Bisphenol A that is used for packaging food and beverages. The chemical has been used since the 1960’s according to the US Food and Drugs Administration (US FDA). BPA was widely used to make polycarbonates or hard clear plastics that are commonly used to store and pack food items and beverages and also line the inner walls of these containers. When exposed to heat (for example from the microwave) or if the container is damaged, this chemical gets mixed with the food and can be ingested. In a report called the 2003-2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) that was released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), experts found that such is the contamination of BPA in food and beverages, 93 percent of around 2,500 urine samples taken in the U.S. showed high levels of BPA.

In this new study lead author Patricia Hunt, a professor in the School of Molecular Biosciences at Washington State University and colleagues have found that BPA-free alternatives are also not as safe as believed. They tested these on lab mice to find problems of infertility among these animals. The researchers believe that this could hold true for humans as well.

I'm not surprised by this new study. Almost everything we eat and drink now days is in some sort of plastic container. These containers supposedly are safe under the perfect conditions but I've read that exposing these plastic containers to sunlight or heat will trigger them to leak chemicals into the food or liquids contained in them. Some are better than others but here's a list of the worst plastic containers. BPA gets most of the attention for being a dangerous plastic but it's just a small part of the overall problem.

Styrofoam Really Is Bad for Your Health

Styrofoam is made from the plastic polystyrene, which is based on building blocks called styrene monomers. When you drink your steaming cup of coffee or spoon your chicken noodle soup or chili out of a Styrofoam cup, you also take in small doses of chemicals that leach from it. “Trace amounts of styrene as well as various chemical additives in polystyrene migrate into food, which increases significantly in hot liquids,” explains Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group (www.ewg.org). “This is a problem, because polystyrene is very commonly used as disposable packaging for hot food and beverages” — and has been for many years!

Styrofoam is probably the worst plastic for you because it's designed to hold hot liquids and all those cancer causing chemicals are leeching out into your hot cup of coffee or you cup of noodles. I can't believe they actually allow people to put food in a styrofoam container and let them microwave for a few minutes to get it nice and boiling hot. Leeching probably even more chemicals than a hot cup of coffee into your food, yummm.

It's very hard to avoid having your food and drinks exposed to plastics. Hell even the tap water runs through plastic pipes in homes and under the streets so you can't 100% avoid it all the time but you can take some easy steps to reduce your exposure. First thing I recommend and do myself is drink out of glass or metal cups. Next thing is don't microwave your food in plastic containers use glass or ceramic containers. Last thing you can do it to eat less processed foods because they usually come in a plastic lined container.

Plastics are a very useful tool in modern society but they come a price and knowing the risks can help us all make better decisions on how we use these materials in the future.

I agree plastics have there place (plastic coated electrical wires) but dang it, plastic is taking over and I’m tired of it! Isn’t it nice how baby food comes in #7 plastic? Good thing I don’t buy that anymore.

Microwaves - very bad - just as bad as the plastics.

Yeah, I prefer cooking and heating up food in the oven instead of the microwave. That damn thing just takes up counter space anyways.
