Ubuntu will self install, and leave your OS intact. It will let you choose which to run, when you boot the computer.

I will do both. Put your computer on a router, even if it is alone, because they can see one past the modem. That way they can only see the router, and NOT the computer.

I intend to use the VPN on the Anrdoid tablet (since the free one is only one device.

But I have run two decades without viruses or malware with Ubuntu!

Well, we have a wireless router that receives from a local tower but I don't think we have a modem.

That sounds real cheap for such an item.

Ubuntu is open sourced. They can not charge you for the software, only the flash drive and copy costs. Always been free....
