The difference is, Trump's foibles are widely known and were widely pushed by the MSM. Hell: John O'Donnell, the author of a 1991 tell-all called Trumped, got his moment in the sun in 2016 courtesy of PBS Frontline amongst others.
This may surprise you,but a lot of Trump's supporters knew of some of his foibles but supported him anyway. The most famous pro-Trump piece of punditry was entitled "The Flight 93 Election, implying that it was Trump or disaster.

But I would drop the "stupid" meme.
They are not stupid.
The govern-cement is not incompetent. They get exactly what they want. So watch what they do, not what they say.
They say, "we have to house the homeless", so they go build a new residential area, and basically give homes away to a few people. But, the contractor, friends of the senator, got a sweet-heart deal for building those homes. A few homes get built for an exorbitant price, and we say that govern-cement is incompetent.
You'd think there was a behavior pattern here...
