Six days ago, Israeli jets have attacked targets in Latakia, Syria. They abused the agreement on early warning mechanism, and they used Russian reconnaissance aircraft as a shield against the Syrian air defense, which resulted in downing of Il-20 plane with 15 crew members onboard. The most curious relation in the Middle East mess was between Russia and Israel. Russia has always helped Israel, despite illegal Israeli attacks on the Syrian territory. Not only did Russia tolerated violations of international law, in contrast to its declared policy, but also, at the request of the Israeli government, refuse to deliver Syria an array of already paid S-300 air defense systems. What did they get in return from Israel? Contempt and death of 15 servicemen in the plane which was trying to evade zone of operation, and was shot by mistake.

So, this morning, Sergey Shoygu, Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation, announced the measures Russia will take to prevent such “accidents” in the future…

The key things are following:

• Within two weeks Russia will complete the delivery to Damascus of an S-300 air defense system.
• The Russian military will also supply better control systems to Syrian Air Defense Troops, which are only supplied to the Russian Armed Forces
• Blanket of electronic countermeasures over Syrian coastline, which would suppress satellite navigation, onboard radar systems and communications of warplanes attacking targets on Syrian territory.

So far, Russian air defense did not consider Israeli jets as a foe. Inclusion of the S-300 air defense system in Syria into Russian defense system, together with the friend or foe (IFF) identification, means that Israeli jets will not be treated as friendly ones any more. It also means that Syrian defense will know about any Israeli jet mission as soon as it take off.

Electronic countermeasures over Syrian coastline means that any jet which enters Syrian air space will get blinded. Missiles will not be usable for precise targeting.

You will hardly hear this news over corporate media, but Russia effectively imposed no-fly zone over Syria for the Israeli jets. This is big.

A complete arrogance in response to the Russian allegations, unfortunately, means that Israel is not interested in good relations with Russia any more. They are probably expecting a major escalation of the conflict in Syria, or even working on it, forgetting the golden rule from the history of war: Do not mess with Russians!
