How Mass Shootings End.

in #informationwar7 years ago

This is not about how to end mass shootings, well maybe it is, this is the best information we have about how mass shootings end.

This is a section from an FBI report entitled "A Study of Active Shooter Incidents in the United States Between 2000 and 2013" where they looked at all the active shooter incidents during that period. Note it is not a study of "mass shootings" the FBI does not use that term.

Resolutions

The majority of the 160 incidents (90 [56.3%]) ended on the shooter’s initiative— sometimes when the shooter committed suicide or stopped shooting, and other times when the shooter fled the scene.

There were at least 25 incidents where the shooter fled the scene before police arrived. In 4 additional incidents, at least 5 shooters fled the scene and were still at large at the time the study results were released.

In other incidents, it was a combination of actions by citizens and/or law enforcement that ended the shootings. In at least 65 (40.6%) of the 160 incidents, citizen engagement or the shooter committing suicide ended the shooting at the scene before law enforcement arrived.
Of those:
■ In 37 incidents (23.1%), the shooter committed suicide at the scene before police arrived.
■ In 21 incidents (13.1%), the situation ended after unarmed citizens safely and successfully restrained the shooter. In 2 of those incidents,24 3 off-duty law enforcement officers were present and assisted.
■■ Of note, 11 of the incidents involved unarmed principals, teachers, other school staff and students who confronted shooters to end the threat (9 of those shooters were students).
■ In 5 incidents (3.1%), the shooting ended after armed individuals who were not law enforcement personnel exchanged gunfire with the shooters. In these incidents, 3 shooters were killed, 1 was wounded, and 1 committed suicide.
■■ The individuals involved in these shootings included a citizen with a valid firearms permit and armed security guards at a church, an airline counter, a federally managed museum, and a school board meeting.25
■ In 2 incidents (1.3%), 2 armed, off-duty police officers engaged the shooters, resulting in the death of the shooters. In 1 of those incidents, the off-duty officer assisted a responding officer to end the threat.26
Even when law enforcement arrived quickly, many times the shooter still chose to end his life. In 17 (10.6%) of the 160 incidents, the shooter committed suicide at the scene after law enforcement arrived but before officers could act.
In 45 (28.1%) of the 160 incidents, law enforcement and the shooter exchanged gunfire. Of those 45 incidents, the shooter was killed at the scene in 21, killed at another location in 4, wounded in 9, committed suicide in 9, and surrendered in 2.

24 Santana High School, March 5, 2001; Appalachian School of Law, January 16, 2002. (See Appendix A).
25 Player’s Bar and Grill, May 25, 2008; Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International Airport, July 4, 2002; Youth with a Mission Training Center/New Life Church, December 9, 2007; United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, June 10, 2009; Panama City School Board Meeting, December 14, 2010, Shooter wounded.
26 AT&T Wireless, May 27, 2010; Trolley Square Mall, February 12, 2007

So the FBI says that unarmed citizens stopped 13% of active shootings whereas armed non police citizens stopped more than 3% which does not sound like much unless you consider that only about one percent of Americans actually carry on a daily basis and they are often prevented from stopping active shooters in the gun free zones that killers so often choose to target for their sprees. So 1% is stopping 3.1% of shooters and the other 99% of unarmed and disarmed citizens are only stopping 13%, clearly we need more armed citizens. Right?

What else can we learn from this?

But that would mean that Gov won't be able to send SWAT teams to collect taxes like Argentina did when they ran out of money.

In Argentina when you walk across the street the cars speed up at you.

Well if they were there at the school they could of stopped it. Oh wait they had four deputy’s out side of the school that didn’t go in🤔🤔🤔🤔🤦‍♀️ Great job they did..... Great post keep it up and steem on!

as a viewpoint of an outside i hardly can relate to this. I am living in germany and for most people here the idea that people around yourself are carry a gun is extremely scary.
Here shootings simply does not happen because nobody has a weapon. The most tragic incidents are with the few people owning a gun at home. (like going crazy and shoot at people outdoors or one of the kids successfully get the hands on the families gun and go with it at school ....)
And it is really rare.
if more people do own weapons, more people who want to do harm, will have the chance to do it. At least i see it that way.
Did you never thought about why all these mass shootings etc. are soooooo widespread in america, but like everywhere in the world its like non-existing. I live in a city with over 110k population and in my 21 years living on this planet ;) there wasnt a single shooting or bad situation(except that one incident a refugee went crazy and attacked a few tourist in a train with an axt). Just my thoughts. Anyway have a great day and i hope it does not seem i just want to piss you off :)

Why do you think you have internalized that irrational fear? In Germany do you get American films and television? I have seen some German films, they seem to have a lot of gun violence. Here in America on scripted TV and in movies and games guns are used as plot devices, every single time they are shown on the screen they are inevitably going to be used at some point in the film, almost always inappropriately and always for violence. So if the only experience of guns you have is from media you are being conditioned to fear guns.

But in real life guns are not often plot devices, the average handgun in America is used in a homicide once every 10,000 years, mostly they just sit there and don't advance any plot, people who actually have guns know this and become desensitized to the conditioning of irrational fear.

It's not true that no one has a weapon there, German civilians are the 4th best armed on Earth. There are 25,000,000 guns there. So maybe there is another reason there are fewer shootings there? How many million drug gang members do you have there? What is the literacy rate there compared to here? How about the way you deal with criminals, do you think your prisons are the same as ours?

"if more people do own weapons, more people who want to do harm, will have the chance to do it. At least i see it that way."
If you check out my other article, the gun debate in 6 charts, you will see that the actual numbers in America are the opposite of what you just predicted, we see that as America has expanded not only the number of guns in circulation but also the number of states where people can carry to all of them, gun homicide has declined.

Did you never thought about why all these mass shootings etc. are soooooo widespread in america, but like everywhere in the world its like non-existing.

They are not really that widespread in America, just the media coverage of them, did you ever wonder why suicide bombers are so widespread in your country but not in America? do you need more bomb laws? Do you need more truck laws? School shootings are down over the years along with gun homicides.

I bet you probably don't even know about your own city just as much as all your other premises were false. What city are you claiming had no shootings at all ever in it?
We have a city like that in America, they require everyone to own a gun. VT requires no permits to buy or carry any gun for an adult with a clean record, their gun homicide rate is about the same as Germany or better, one or two shootings will throw off the numbers because of the small population.

I like that you ask questions and I hope you are open to the answers. There is a lot of bullshit anti gun propaganda that is promulgated overseas, look into the actual numbers and trends. More guns than ever, fewer fatal accidents and homicides, that's what's up.
