66% of Americans Earn Less Than $20 An Hour

The study was released like a year ago, but we can trust that the numbers have not changed. They even may have gone up since then. A few days prior the release, the gov asserted that unemployment rate was below 4% for the first time since 2000. The official figure has to be fudged.

But further, look at the study finding stating that the minimum wage in Washington state should be 42 dollars.

But here Earth Custodians have done some research and on their website, ALICE, we read that the "survival budget" for NY city as a single is $30K and for a couple with 1 infant and 1 preschooler is about $73K. Again, this is a "survival budget", meaning that spaghetti and pizzas are a daily menu, and possibly with a full meal on the weekend. And with a rent of 1,500 dollars, that means that long subway rides to get to work are extremely likely.

So what is so great about the economy in the end? Over 2/3 of the country is struggling right above or under the poverty line. A severe downturn shouldn't be that far away anymore. How long can the illusion last?

Almost half of US families can't afford basics like rent and food | May 18, 2018

Nearly 51 million households don't earn enough to afford a monthly budget that includes housing, food, child care, health care, transportation and a cell phone, according to a study released Thursday by the United Way ALICE Project. That's 43% of households in the United States.... Many of these folks are the nation's child care workers, home health aides, office assistants and store clerks, who work low-paying jobs and have little savings, the study noted. Some 66% of jobs in the US pay less than $20 an hour....

For instance, in Seattle's King County, the annual household survival budget for a family of four (including one infant and one preschooler) in 2016 was nearly $85,000. This would require an hourly wage of $42.46. But in Washington State, only 14% of jobs pay more than $40 an hour....

Poor America: 40% of Americans Can't Afford Middle-Class Lifestyle

Stephanie Hoopes, Ph.D., Director, United Way ALICE Project told Axios, “based on 2016 data, there were 34.7 million households in that group — double the 16.1 million that are in actual poverty.” “These are households with adults who are working but earning too little — 66% of Americans earn less than $20 an hour, or about $40,000 a year if they are working full time.”
