WhatsApp was designed as a surveillance tool. It is no surprise that clever coders are able to open backdoors put there to allow government surveillance.
This is why backdoors for "legitimate" law enforcement needs are such a bad idea.
Once you put in a backdoor anyone with some smarts can access it.
What surprised me a little was that since they have the access anyway, why would they need to hack in?
So they may just be practicing for our private accounts.
